BRYAN PETERSON is a professional photographer, internationally known instructor, and founder of The Bryan Peterson School of Photography at www.BPSOP.com. He is also the best-selling author of Understanding Exposure, Understanding Shutter Speed, Understanding Close-Up Photography, Understanding Digital Photography, Beyond Portraiture, and, most recently, Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide. It surely opens up your mind in to creativity!

This is the first book that I ever purchased related to Photography. And it was a fruitful decision.
It is well written, well composed, well explained and has lots of content in it. I've watched all of Bryan Peterson's videos on YouTube and I simply admire his works and his teaching techniques. And that made me purchase and give this book a try.
He has covered almost everything that we (as learning photographers) need to know in order to compose our shots and put an emotion/story/theme in to it. It surely opens up your mind and help you see the same things in many perspectives, helping us to make a better composition. He also talks about the uses of different lenses and their purposes and how we can use them to their best potential with creativity.
Overall I'm very pleased with this book and I highly recommend it to any photographer or photography learner how wants to enhance their skills and composition techniques. It can also be a very good gift if you are planning to give to someone!

Great introduction to taking better photographs

As with other Bryan Peterson books, "Learning to See Creatively" is a well written, easy-to-read book aimed at beginner/novice photographers. In this book, you will learn about the basics of composition and visual design and leave you with new ideas to apply to your own images. Note: if you have read other books by Peterson, you may notice some recycling of material (although if you liked those books, you're likely to enjoy this one as well).
This book starts off with a basic discussion of the characteristics of various lenses. There's a short description of how each lens type behaves followed by a few examples photographs used for illustration. The style/method of presentation in this topic is repeated throughout this book. The main text is clear and informative (focusing on just the basics) and there is a small selection of example photographs for each topic. Each photograph has a short sidebar accompanying it. These sidebars have a bit of a tendency to contain more text about the thing being photograph, rather than focusing on the relevance of that photograph to the subject. This may be a bit distracting, but not entirely unwelcome.
The next three chapters deal with 'core' compositional topics. You'll learn about elements of visual design (lines, shapes, etc), followed by basic ideas like the "rule of thirds" and "frame within a frame". A short discussion about the different characteristics about light closes out this section. Although there was not a lot of depth in these topics, there was enough material to be engaging for the beginning photographer.
To wrap up the book, there's a short chapter about digital photography, although the material is dated and particularly shallow. A chapter on 'career considerations' is last, and I found it surprising to see this chapter in a book clearly meant for beginners. Like the previous chapter, there's not a lot that would be useful here for either beginners or seasoned photographers.
Overall, this book is a good choice for someone who has just learned the basic technical aspects of photography, and is searching for ways to augment that information to take better photographs. While you won't find a lot of depth in each topic, the level of detail is appropriate for the audience, and the material presented serves as a good foundation for further study. Recommended.

Great book to read, for the enthousiast photographer.

Great book to read. Certainly for the enthousiast photographer who do not have an education in photography. The book is not full of images but it presents a descent background supported by images to show what is meant. It explains how to set up an image, sometimes followed by an out of the box" view for the real creative result.
I like that the author limits itself to what you can do with a camera, with limited post processing.
I read the book in combination with Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure". You need that book to fully understand and appreciate "Learning to See Creatively". The combination I'ld like to rate with 5 starts as the two books together give a very good and compact overview of the technology of photography, followed by the creative view.
