Step One: Acquire several unnaturally large monkeys

First, kudos to Amazon for getting this to me in an incredibly quick manner. Five stars!

Second, the review:

I enjoy reading these satirical 'handbooks' and have read several. My favorite is the "Action Hero's Handbook", which is essentially a "Worst Case Scenario" book with a James Bond flare. THIS is not a book like that. You will not find real-world advice for outlandish situations in this book. Instead you will find fictional-world advice for situations that are probably perfectly reasonable within the laws of a comic book universe. Overall it is surprisingly well thought out and the humor is present throughout.

The presentation is nice as well. Readability is good, the writing is always very basic and understandable. The cover design and interior artwork is nice and the parchment texture on the pages gives the book character. Points there.

I will throw in that this is a PG-13 book. Where many of these kinds of books excersise a bit of restraint for the sake of younger readers, this one seems to assume (rightly) that the average reader is going to be a young adult who has read WAY too many comics and if probably used to seeing a few swears and innuendos in a book. I'm not knocking any points off because I fall into this group.

Overall, I give it 4.5 stars, but I can't do that on Amazon, so I'm opting for the full 5.

If your into this sort of thing, give it a try. If you're not... go read something else. If you're on the fence, give it a try anyway. You never know.

This is a GREAT, great book for learning veterinary micro. I've read and bought (unfortunately) a few books on the matter and it would have been nice if I had bought this one first....would have saved me some money, and I would have a more fluent understanding of the matter at this point.

These vocab. books perfect for homeschool!

I got this vocabulary book at our local junior college bookstore for my middle school student to use. It is wonderful, and now I am looking at the others in the series. Sort of series anyway. It says this is for the highest reading level books, but my 7th grader has no problems with any of the reading or vocab. words. They are mostly new words to her. I would hope college students would be able to do this with no problem. The chapters are short, we finish one a week, and varied, like music, or theater, or history, etc. They are set up so you can do a lesson a day for maybe 4 days a week. The only odd thing is their analogies, which we skip, not like most analogies and without a teacher guide I do not know what they are looking for. That is only once every few chapters anyway. Oh, and it is strange to have to match a photo to a vocabulary word that really isn't something concrete that can be pictured!

Great for home school though.

Admirable,-- an unexpected and surprisingly sensitive find.

Quite honestly I did not know about this book until I learned about it while reading NBC correspondent Don Teague's book Saved by Her Enemy: An Iraqi woman's journey from the heart of war to the heartland of America. In the former the author wrote about a young Iraqui woman turned translator he helped save from certain death while she was employed helping Americans in her native country. Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing up in the Shadow of Saddamis a remarkable book written by an Iraqui woman herself. Unlike Teague's translator, who came from more humble beginnings, the author of this book was born into privilege, the daughter of Saddam Hussein's former personal pilot. You would not have expected to have such a woman end up championing the cause of many abused women. It took being raped by her husband of an arranged marriage to inspire the author to passionately start helping women like herself.

As the book jacket informs us the author, Zainab Salbi, is the founder and president of Women for Women International, "a nonprofit organization providing women survivors to move from crisis to stability and build peace one woman at a time." Salbi is a very intelligent and highly educated woman holding degrees from George Mason University and the London School of Economics. She wrote the book in conjunction with Laurie Becklund, "an award-winning Los Angeles journalist and author...A former LOS ANGELES TIMES reporter, she wrote the first story about Salbi in 1991, when Zainab was a young woman stranded in America due to the Gulf War." It is at that time the author had just left her abusive husband and found herself unable to return to her native country.

The book begins with Salbi writing about her growing up in Iraq where her family was placed in the uneviable position of having to (more or less forcibly)socialize with Saddam Hussein. The author vividly describes her impressions of the dictator and her knowledge of the fear he instilled in all those around him. Salbi's mother fearing that her daughter might herself become a victim if she remained in Iraq strongly encouraged Zainab to marry one of her countrymen already in the United States thus having a place to which she could find refuge. Instead Zainab became a victim of this man. She tolerated ill treatment for quite some time before the ultimate insult--marital rape-- at which point she decided to leave her husband. After a divorce and some time had passed the author found someone who was truly kind and supportive of her endeavors. Along with her new husband she founded Women to Women International, the first to benefit from being the many women who had been forced into "rape camps" in Bosnia.

This is truly an inspirational book. I am not surprised to learn that the author has made frequent apperances on the Oprah Winfrey show. Winfrey, as many of us know, herself has done much to empower women to escape abusive situations. I would strongly recommend this book especially to all women who have ever suffered ill treatment, work with victims of abuse or aspire to one day.

This study of the history of China, its social forces and tendencies and the character of its people, was originally published in 1922, following the author's return from a year as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Beijing. Although much has happened in the years that have intervened, the book still has great value and interest for all who are concerned to understand China and her future amongst the major nations of the world. It contains much interesting historical analysis which is very relevant today, and some extraordinarily far-sighted observations. For this reason a reprint has been felt desirable and it has been left unchanged. If in part it may reveal a record of dead hopes and dead fears, those parts which are not topical are still true; and, having regard to China's rapid growth in industrial and international power, those permanent elements of the book cannot be neglected either by the student of international affairs or by the general reader.

About the Author
Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was born in England and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. His long career established him as one of the most influential philosophers, mathematicians, and social reformers of the twentieth century.

Insightful Thoughts Even Valueable Today

Russell explained in depth the power balance in China among British, French, Russia, US, Germany, and Japan in the late 19th century and early 20th century. As a peace lover, Russell disgusted at the Japanese invasion and control in China. He was able to explain the root cause of the Japanese aggression using the Race, Culture, Religion, and Industry development factors. As he stated the Chinese culture could not incubate aggression as contrary to the Japanese culture. Since the Far East culture root is deep and usually carries along for centuries, I believe his view still holds true in the 21st century. This book also explained the possibility of a 'Red China' in 1922. Because Russia was a traditional enemy of Japan in the Far East, Russell thought Russia would have a huge impact on 'Young China' because "one's enemy's enemy is usually a friend". I was so much impressed by Russell's social analysis and insightful thought on China. I wish he were still alive today so he could educate the Westerns about who is the true peace loving people in the Far East.

Bertrand Russell gives an in-depth account and analysis of the problems faced by China during the early 20th century. While analyzing the dynamics at play on the global front, he also attempts to identify the three most pressing issues which China faced internally--the need for an orderly government, industrial development under Chinese control and the spread of education. Notwithstanding the fact that he is a Westerner, he strives to debunk myths and prevailing misconceptions of the Chinese people. Russell writes elegantly and this book is indeed a remarkable account for those who wish to learn more about China.

Even good for western people to understand current China

In this book, Bertrand Russell expressed his ideas about both the positive and negative characters of Chinese. It can only be written after carefully thinking over what are in Chinese people's mind. Great book on colonialism

Cook does such a good job with this book. He gives a very good introduction to why the Europeans colonized and then he goes into specific examples or as he call's them "case studies". The case studies are fascinating and the reader develops a new perception on the brutality of colonies.
