Bali, the Ultimate Guide 2012

I have never seen such a complete guide book. Usually when there are pretty pictures the detail parts on how and where to do things are lacking. Not the case here. And the map pages: They show street names, hotels, markets, restaurants, dive centers, medical clinics, temples, and other attractions ALL ON ONE MAP. You do not have to flip pages back and forth to figure out if the restaurant is located next to the hotel. In addition, there is a separate fold-out large scale map so you can see for yourself whether you should turn right or left in a congested area. As for history and culture and travel advice, I'm not sure there is any topic not covered in this guide book. When I go to Bali, I will take only this book, not 3 or 4 different ones like I usually do when I travel. Diane Camp

Yes! This IS the Ultimate Guide to Bali

As someone who's been to Bali many times I can say this book is a must-have whether it's your first trip or your 50th. From the insider details written on history, culture, food and art, to religion, geography and everything in between, the book satisfies those who love to really learn about places they visit. Couple that background with a wealth of detailed information on all the obvious things a travel book should tell you like where to stay and dine at different price levels, what to do in the area, including things off the beaten path, where to shop and so on and the book is worth every cent. Yet many books will give you this information and still not be the best choice.

What makes this book so great in my view is the ease of use. The island is divided up into sections and all the information for that area is not only easy to find, the beautifully printed photos entice you to visit places you might not have considered.

Yet even more important to my map geek heart are the intricate, detailed maps spread throughout the entire book. These are full color maps of regions as well as smaller areas like the popular Ubud or beaches. Hotels, restaurants, tourist destinations are all clearly marked and the map is placed right in that section of the book. No need to flip back and forth trying to figure out where you're heading. In addition the book includes a beautiful pull out map of the whole island with a pocket in the back cover so it stays all together nicely. A fantastic addition to the book.

Ms. Hoffman's many years both as a traveler throughout Indonesia and as a travel writer are evident on every page. She revised and wrote you the book she wished she'd had to guide her around the island. I've truly not encountered a better guide to Bali before and I've seen many of them. I don't believe you'll be disappointed.

Our Favorite Fenian, Mick Gallagher returns in another of the young reprobates adventures! Mick is a young, spirited Irishman, who loves his country, his girlfriend, and flying (not always in that order!). This time, his girlfriend is kidnapped, and Mick must find her, along with taking part in a dangerous trial of a new fighter. Top rate flying adventure from an author who really knows his aviation onions! As a former pilot, I love this series and am anxiously ( hint) looking forward to many more to come. Will be enjoyed by all lovers of the "Biggles"books. (Hmm I wonder if Mick and Captain James Bigglesworth will ever meet)

Having grown up with a sincere interest in the NBA I was easily drawn to the 'behind the scenes' facts Mr. Jozsa brought forward regarding owners and team extensions, sales, etc. As a child even through high school my focus was on the players with little time or interest in reading the sports section other than to keep up with stats or team records.

I found all the facts about how franchises began and who funded them interesting all the way down to how the team name was selected and why. Reading about the popular players that were initially involved with those teams and through struggles to survive a particular market or management structure certainly provided a perspective that shed new light on some great menories of growing up in Chicago area where I watched many games at Chicago Stadium.

Interesting, enlightening and a fun read.

If you traveled, or would like to travel to China and be immersed with its culture, then this book will enhance that travel experience.

If your interest for the martial arts is because you appreciate the performing arts, then this book will contribute to that appreciation.

And if you ever taught ESL or learned English as a second language, then you will easily relate to the students' struggles and the sometimes amusing irregularities of English grammar, pronunciation and idioms.

Iron and Silk is on my list of ten books I would take on a desert island. Salzman's writing style sparkles with enthusiasm and the energy of youth; a feeling of discovery for whatever is newly learned; and a view of everyday life experiences with a feel for adventure, a conversion of the mundane into the extraordinary. Salzman not only mastered wu-shu, but he also mastered the written language that emits sparks on every page. Even his daily meditations reverberate with intensity.

This is an ideal book for a young adult who lacks motivation or skills to move onward.

Like the Culture, Subtle Yet Strong

Mark Salzman's quiet sketches of his time teaching in China slowly gather force and carry you away with their subtle and sensitive power. We meet obstinate bureaucrats, fellow teachers and students, artists, common fisherman, martial arts practitioners, calligraphers, elders, and children. Salzman's quite good at capturing character with a few deft strokes (it's almost like a "literary calligraphy") and has a special talent for finding the "just right" quote to end an anecdote or vignette. Though written in the 80s, cultures don't change overnight and this memoir is as accurate now as it was then. If you're interested in Chinese culture, this concise anecdotal wonder is a must. And if you're not interested in Chinese culture, you will be after reading it. Recommended.

This Wonderful Autobiographical Account...

...is must reading for those with an interest in Chinese martial arts and culture. The author describes his journey through China, the people he meets on the way including the legendary Teacher Pan. Quite a bit of the book describes his enounters with ordinary Chinese people and how be comes to appreciate the culture through his experiences. In essence, Salzman learnes to see things with Chinese eyes--including his martial arts training in Wushu.

I also recommend the pre-quel to this book, "Lost In Place", Salzman's second autobiographical book, before or after this one. The two volumes go well together and provide a fascinating portrait of academic and martial growth. PERFECT for young people who are interested in martial arts as a lifelong pursuit, or anyone with an interest in Chinese culture & living in China to study.

Fantastic book

I learned so much from this book. It was uncanny how many times I found myself reading about exact situations and outcomes I have experienced as a people pleaser. I didn't realize that I was creating the negative outcomes I was experiencing through my own expectations and inability to say no. I wanted to make everyone happy and the opposite happened instead. I really recommend this book if you think you are a people pleaser or constantly find yourself going "above and beyond" for others but feel that they never come through for you.

As I look back over the years my last two relationships ended the same way, I stayed behind blaming myself with what
"ifs" and asking myself what had I missed to provide them with? The sad reality was that I had spend years pleasing them both with everything they wanted, I had to be nice to them because I wanted them to stay. This book is a must to read for people like myself who have spent their lifetime pleasing others because ........... just because....it is time to realize that we can not buy love, persuade others to stay because of our acts of kindness.

A supercar lovers dream book!

Awesome book at a great price. This was a gift for my teenage son, and I think he literally jumped a foot off his chair when he opened this. Book is very high quality and with current supercars. I guarantee this will be a knockout hit for anyone that has an appreciation of high-end sports cars and wants to be able to drool over them at any time :)

About the Author
Cate McGowan is an award-winning author and Georgia native who's been anthologized in W. W. Norton's Flash Fiction International. She's contributed to many magazines and literary publications, including Glimmer Train, Louisville Review, Moon City Review, and Vestal Review, and the English fashion magazine, Tank. Cate's been an editor for the Louisville Review and SFWP and an arts writer and essayist for national outlets. Named a top college professor on Ratemyprofessors.com, she teaches writing in Florida.

Oh, the Places You'll Go.

Cate McGowan’s characters sleep with me.

Blue, with his frenetic need to paint, longs for what could be a mermaid with narcolepsy.

Tara and David, floating between childhood and adulthood, entertwine languidly on the cusp of…something.

Violet Gray Witherspoon, a name of nouns, spills yearning verbs onto secret pages.

Jebediah dances with sacrifice, then freedom. Superheroes emerge in unlikely places. Rats expose themselves in the prison yard. A crop of immigrant birds wend their unlikely way in country.

Cate McGowan’s characters inhabit my dreams. They have taken up residence in my REM sleep, but, unlike some vague dreams you cannot recall in the morning, they are indelible.

McGowan’s prose is florid and full, yet keenly concise. It pulls you into the picture, and from inside, you can taste the paint upon the canvas.

As I drive past rows of vegetables in fields during my travels, I shall never look at farm equipment the same way again.

Enjoy this book in one sitting, as I did, or let it stretch out limpidly over a few days or weeks. But most definitely devour it. You won’t be sorry.

This collection of stories lives up to its title, in that they take us deftly to true places we have never been, places that we get to know through cunning observation and beautiful prose. With Cate McGowan as our gracious and expert guide, showing us just what to look for, we come away enlightened and delighted for having made the journey through time to these places that feel both happily, and sometimes painfully, familiar. This book is armchair travel at its very very best.
