I took a Python scripting class a few years ago but haven't used it in quite a while. I needed a refresher on Python scripting for an ArcGIS upcoming project and this book was perfect. The fundamentals were nicely reviewed and the rest of the book is full of easy to reference practical examples. I especially like the "How it works..." sections that explain the finer points of the code. This book may be a little challenging for those unfamiliar with object-oriented programming, but I highly recommend it for anyone who has some Python experience.

So many useful examples, user-friendly cookbook... But be aware of version

I haven't gone through all the exercises yet, but so far I liked this book very much. There are many useful examples which you could readily apply to your daily jobs (if you are GIS user), such as exporting a map to pdf or image file, automating printing process, and creating geoprocessing tools, etc. Many of the examples are not too long to follow, and very user friendly (the book comes with all the necessary electronic files, including codes). Considering the fact that the first edition came out only in February 2013, this second edition came out rather fast; I guess there's much update since then and also many requests for the updated version (so, authors,thank you for your quick action!). One drawback was that I'm using ArcGIS ver. 10.1 (the book is written for ver.10.3) and some scripts did not work (e.g. Chapter 6, reading from a text file and plotting wildfire points). For those parts, ideally, the authors could have clarified which script would or would not work in which version of ArcGIS. Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to those who have taken intro Python class for ArcGIS, and want to explore further.

Perfect for beginners

It's a perfect book to start learning arcpy. The exercises are interesting but not too complicated so you don't feel frustated and every step is explained so you can't get lost.

After doing an arcpy online course (beginner level) I purchased the book Arcpy and ArcGis- Geospatial Analysis With Python but I think it's not the best option for beginners. I recommend Programing ArcGIS with Python Cookbook for beginners.

Solid book and framework

Analysis of graphs is one of the core elements of consulting interviews. It's important to interpret data accurately, but it is even more important to understand the full story behind the graph and get to the "so-what" quickly. This book focuses on helping you master this core aspect of with a solid framework and a nice selection of graphs. The 8 cases are really good, too, providing good practice on graph interpretation. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in management consulting - Associate Principal at one of the top 3 consulting firms

Quite useful for non-scientists

Quite useful for non-scientists who want to hone their graph-reading skills. It's nice to have all the different types of graphs in one place, but it doesn't contain any radically new info that isn't online somewhere. There are several typos throughout, which are, at best, annoying, and at worst, make one of the example cases unusable. In that case, each column on the bar chart is exactly the same, even though the written analysis suggests they are different. Hopefully the second edition will fix these errors but I feel like this edition was rushed out carelessly.

Great Book. Highly recommend.

This is a great book! I was recommended to buy this book and start using cases and graph analysis as a way to hire Associates in investment banking. Totally amazed by what I learned and I would strongly recommend to hiring managers as well as people applying for roles requiring interpretation of graphs....not just in consulting, but in investment banking too. Additionally, I was surprised to pick up a lot of new ways to think about data presentation, so has benefits beyond just studying for interviews.

Here I am an artist with three art degrees... and I never learned most of this information! My main degree was in painting and Illustration!!!! Honestly the most I learned was about cool and warm color and value - that's IT!

This book is easy to grasp, pithy and organized in such a way that you can go right to the area you are interested in without having to scan the entire book. I learned more about how to use color and paint light in the hour I ravenously scanned through it than I did in all those years of college. If you wish to learn anything about painting you must have this book!

It may seem such a simple subject, but how to set up a palette is one of the MOST confusing things an artist learns. Many times you just pick up a palette that someone else used and wing it until you get comfortable with it. Mr. Gurney actually takes so much of the mystery out of how to choose your palette of colors and how to work with what you have in that palette. This section ALONE is worth the price of the book!

Also he explains how our vision works so we can be aware of it and make better choices in how we render color and light in our images - as well as how to pay attention to depth of field! I especially loved the comparison of a photograph and a painting from observation and how much you miss in the photo. Again, this information alone is worth the price of the book!

If you are and artist looking to learn how to render an image realistically and believably, this book MUST be in your library. Mr. Gurney has taken information from many divers sources that would take another person years to gather if you could even find these out of print books and information, and he has put it all in a well-organized and easily read book that is so deeply appreciated for its clarity.

Thank you, Mr. Gurney, for all your hard work. This book should become and textbook in any painting class!

Brilliant

It is a very accessible guide that's filled with interesting and useful information on color and light. It's fortunate we have so many colors today at our disposable, and now with this book, something to help make sense of them.

The book talks about color in a very practical sense, as you would see them in life. The lessons are observations of light and colors from James Gurney's years of painting experience. He brings his points across with his own beautiful paintings as examples, clearly explaining why and how he uses colors. It amazes me the amount of work James Gurney has created over the years, and this book is filled with them, from his plein-air to Dinopedia paintings.

There are lessons on sources of light, light and form, understanding the color wheel, how light reacts with surfaces and other elements, and visual perception. You'll learn interesting things like why the moon looks blue, when happens to light when it travels through green canopy, tips on mixing colors, and a whole lot more. There are lots of tips and techniques included. The book is also well researched and I enjoy reading the history of color as they were used in the past by other artists.

It's really a no-brainer to pick this up if you're into creating art, or even if you just want to check out the beautiful paintings in the book.

Highly recommended reference. And you should also check out his other book Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn't Exist.

Excellent skill expansion tool - the textbook for the self-taught artist

Brilliant! LOVE this book. It helps expand my skill sets with an understanding that allows me to immediately apply the information regardless of the medium. I am currently applying this to my pastel work as well as multi-media. My goal was to grasp a better understanding of how to apply light by understanding tones and values in order to create more realistic pieces. I even bought one for an artist friend. It's the ideal self-taught artists as it explains things simply in one-two pages without going on and on. My only constructive criticism, is regarding page 156 where the author discusses the colour zones of the face. Considering most of the planet inhabits humans of various pigment and variations of melanin shades, it seems a bit short sighted to only mention how to accurately portray the colour zones of the face on lighter skinned (white) people - as mentioned on the pages of that topic. It completely omits suggested theories or techniques related to drawing of those of indigenous, south Asian or southeast Asian or even African complexed humans. Understanding that the various tones exist in complexion are vast, it would be awesome to note what an artist should look for in order to accurately portray the subject.

About the Author
Rabinder Singh Bhamra was born in 1940 and raised in the city of Amritsar in Punjab, India into an industrial family. He grew up with an interest in the fine arts and finished his college education at Khalsa College, Amritsar with a Bachelor of the Arts. Later, the author did his Honors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT in Bombay, where he worked for six years as a Production and Quality Manager before migrating to Long Island, New York. The author has been living in New York since 1972 with his wife, Balwinder Kaur of Chandigarh. He worked as a Principal Engineer and Quality Manager in microelectronics and electronic components manufacturing with General Instruments Corp. Presently, he is working with County of Nassau as a Project Manager. The author has been involved as a volunteer in the management of the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society since 1972 for 19 years until 1991, where he served as a General Secretary, Vice President and Trustee. He was one of the founding members of the Sikh Council of North America in 1978 and helped start the Sikh Day Parade on Baisakhi Day since 1988. He has also helped run the Sikh Studies Program at Columbia University for 10 years. As a community spokesperson, he presented the Sikh religion in interfaith meetings and conferences. He was working with JUS Punjabi T.V. till 2011, the first National Punjabi T.V. Channel in the USA, as a Talk Show Host and Senior Correspondent. He is deeply involved in the spread of Gurmat through writing, lectures, katha, kirtan and TV presentations. The author is also an Honorary Chaplain with the Department of Police, County of Nassau, New York.

OMG... One of the best book I have read so far. It explains in simple terms about the Sikh Religion. A religion of humanity. How to understand God, Live your simple life. How to love humanity. Handy reference work

My Art History department adopted this book as its official style-manual a few years ago, and we assign it as a textbook for our writing and methodology class. To my great dismay, however, our bookstore has had some trouble ordering it this year, and so I have encouraged my students to "cut the Gordion knot" by ordering it from Amazon. The chapters on choosing a topic and organizing an argument are, I think, useful and well-written, but the greatest value of this book is Chapters 9 and 10, which provide clear instructions for writing footnotes and bibliography. This may be a mechanical task, but it is a frustrating one for many students, because there are so many possible formats to use (MLA, Turabian, etc.) Barnet's system has the virtue of being designed specifically for research papers about art and art history, and the format he recommends is clear and logical. The book also reprints the instructions for contributors from the Art Bulletin, the most prestigious art-historical journal in this country, and so will be of value for graduate students and recent PhD's preparing their first works for publication.

I was quite surprised, but I really like this book. I was having a lot of trouble writing an art history paper and this book really helped clarify my thoughts. The book asks pointed questions that helps you focus your thoughts. I would strongly recommend this book to someone writing an art history paper.

Useful in some ways, not in others.

I recently read the 6th edition of this book in hopes that it would help me to improve my ability to understand and write about art. I found that the book is a direct, well-written primer for someone finishing high school or beginning their undergraduate degree, but for someone with a bit more experience, it turns out to be a mixed bag.
I know next to nothing about visual art. I'm the quintessential "knows what I likes, and likes what I knows" type of guy. On the other hand, I'm a graduate student in English, so I'm well-practiced in writing essays and in applying various theoretical and critical methods. I read this book in the hopes that it would help me to better understand art. That is, I wanted to learn, as Sylvia Barnet puts it, "How does art mean?" The beginning of the text does introduce some basic questions and ways to think about different kinds of art, ranging from painting, to sculpture, to architecture, to photography, to video art, etc. However, this is not meant to be an instructional book to teach someone about art. It is more like an assistant text for a freshman-level art history course. A great deal of the book is spent discussing how to organize essays, sentence structure, revising, formatting, and some instruction on critical methods. But, again, this book is not a book on writing. It's not about art, it's not about writing, so what is it? Well, like it says, it's about writing about art. A good deal of this book was useless to me, but some of it was enlightening. If you've already got some experience studying the visual arts, or some experience writing, or you just want a really indepth study on either, pick out something else. If, however, you just want an easily understood, basic primer on writing and art, this isn't a bad choice at all.

You may be left wanting more like me.

I was very excited to get an advanced copy of this book, but it left me wanting more. More detail.

I would compare this with "The $100 Startup." It covers the topic on a very superficial level. Chris offers many examples how people found the work they were meant for, but I think the book would have been more effective if he shared less stories, but went into more detail on each. I want to know about the struggles people faced. It can't be roses and sunshine for everyone.

Check this book out from your library before buying. You may be left wanting more like me.

Never Too Late

For most of my career, I wrestled with the question of what do I want to be when I grow up. I always looked with longing toward the non conforming options: consultant, seminar leader, entrepreneur, bike shop owner, solopreneur in some form or other (I don’t like taking orders). But the rational options seemed to be climb the corporate ladder, then join an established university faculty. And I never mustered the courage to go much beyond the rational.

There have always been books which made the non conforming seem plausible and even attractive: Barbara Sher with Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want and later I Could Do Anything, If Only I Knew What It Was; Marsha Sinetar with Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow followed by To Build the Life You Want, Create the Work You Love; Tama Kieves with This Time I Dance; Corey Ciocchetti with Real Rabbits: Chasing an Authentic Life; and more. This is the milieu in which Chris Guillebeau caught my attention many years ago first with The Art of Nonconformity followed by The $100 Startup and The Happiness of Pursuit. Now (April 5, 2016) Chris is back with another entry: Born For This. This is the book I have been waiting for. It not only provides guidance to answer the question “What do I want to do?”, but also gives real down to earth advice on HOW to do it, and more importantly WHY to do it. Chris has already proven himself to be an accomplished writer with his previous books and his blog entries. This book contains the same easy to read style. It is not abstract. Again like his other writing, it is full of real life examples. And it recognizes that the only real way to get where you want to go, or even know where that might be, is to try things, then try again. Following Cal Newport, Chris subscribes to the philosophy that most of us don’t just write down our passion one day, then go for it. We learn what our real passion is by doing things, thinking about their impact on ourselves and others, judging how that fits with our self image, then doing some more. In 13 chapters, Chris translates that simple to grasp concept into action steps to help anyone make it real. When I completed my career at age 70, I decided rather than retire, I am starting over. Chris’ new book gives me confidence that this time I can do it even better, have more fun, and finally live the dream.

Well worth your time and money

Hobbies are as different as day and night and one of mine is reading self-help (or simply helpful?) books on the topic of finding the right work - the work I was meant to do. Of the many I read thus far, I liked Chris Guillebeau's "Born for this" the most. Here's why:

* It is a good read. Don't underestimate the importance of this point! I hate authors whose tone is condescending or patronizing, who make ambitious claims but provide only platitudes, who tell you that you're doing things wrong unless you do them their way. This book will not make you feel bad or stupid and will not try to sell you a magic formula without which you can't possibly be successful. It's written in a down-to-earth straightforward manner, it feels honest, and it doesn't overpromise and underdeliver.

* It provides practical advice without flooding the reader with tons of case studies (stories), half of which usually seem made-up anyway. If you're looking to read about how "Robert" or "Stella" found the work they were born to do, this isn't the book for you. The author uses a few people's journeys (including his own) to illustrate his most important points, but within measure and only where it makes sense.

* It allows for introspection without asking you to spend hours on end carrying out in-depth self-analysis exercises. There's a very useful self-evaluation exercise that is meant to help the reader figure out whether the focus at this point in time is/should be on joy, money, or flow, but that's one of the few I actually had to use a pen for.

* It employs several concepts I found very helpful: the joy/money/flow formula (or how you should not compromise on any of them), the necessary back-up plan (including secondary sources of income and how to start generating them in 24 hours or 19 days), finding your thing through active listening (or how your "inbox" can tell you what you're great at), and learning how and when to give up.

After reading the book, I have a much clearer idea what my next professional steps could look like. I think it's unrealistic to expect an epiphany from reading a book, but I did expect useful guidance and was not disappointed.

About the Author

Laurice Elehwany Molinari, a veteran film and TV writer in Hollywood for over two decades, has penned over thirty scripts for various studios and networks. Her very first feature script, written while a fellow at the American Film Institute, became Columbia Picture’s critically acclaimed children’s classic, My Girl. She went on to pen The Brady Bunch Movie and The Amazing Panda Adventure. Laurice lives with her husband and two children in Los Angeles, the City of Angels, where her lifelong love for our heavenly guardians inspired her to write a book about them.

The second book in Molinari's Ether series did not disappoint!

The continuation of the story about Vero and his angel-in-training friends was full of action, adventure, peril, and difficult moral decisions. If you're searching for a series that combines some nail-biting action with characters who face realistic, difficult real-world decisions that preteens can relate to, then this is the one to read. It is filled with messages of friendship, family bonds, and learning to listen to God's guidance in difficult situations. Pillars of Fire ends with a shocking twist that will leave you begging for book three.

Totally awesome

This book is undoubtedly one of the best Christian books out there! I didn't like how Vero seemed wimpy at times but other than that it was great. I am liked it even more than the first one. I hope Mrs. Molinari makes more like it!

even better than the first

Books about half angels and angels in training have become rather popular, and although not very likely, they do make for interesting reading. This series is about a young boy who is an angel in training. Even thought they are juvenile fiction,

This book is the second in the series and picks up where the first one left off. There is more going on in ths book, and it is more on the suspenseful side. The main character, Vero, has advanced in his abilities and is coming to realize what he will leave behind when he becomes a full fledged angel.

It is an interesting and fascinating read. It is fictional, but it gives an imagined look at what might be going on behind the scenes in the spiritual realm. I don't feel this series does a discredit at all to God or angels, but is a fun and interesting read. The book has good morals and lessons, and very likable characters. A definite recommendation for juvenile readers and adults who enjoy juvenile fiction
