About the Author

Carl G. Herndl is Professor of English and teaches in the graduate program in Rhetoric and Composition in the English department at the University of South Florida. He is also Associate Dean of the Patel College of Global Sustainability where he teaches in the Masters program in Sustainability.

Expectations- school 5. Personal 0.

This is a book for my English college course. My teacher is all about the environment. That's all we read about. Talk about. Write about.
I'm bored out of my mind.
This book is a collection of essays about the environment and sustainability. You'll learn some interesting tidbits and few essays mildly interesting. It's a good book, very well put together. A wide variety of environmental issues. The negative effects we have caused, how we caused them, and solutions. Many views both negative and positive.
This is 5 stars for my environmentalist nut of a teacher. It's a good book with good stuff about its topic.
My personal rating is a 0
Do I read ahead? No. If I found it in a library..? Flip thru the pages and read a passage or two, but not check it out.
Would I buy this of my own free will? Never.
It's not my cup of tea. I love reading and I could read whole books nonstop for hours beyond hours but it's such a chore to read just the pages I'm assigned to. I have to force myself to do it.

Bringing Yoga to Life

Simliar to the first book I read by Donna Farhi (Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit: A Return to Wholeness), this book was nothing like I expected, yet still exceptionally wonderful.

I was expecting an overview of the basic ethical principles of yoga. Instead, I was greeted with an intriguing introduction to all the possibilities yoga has to offer, unique angles on the eight-limbed path of true Yoga, and (last but not least) the various "roadbloacks & distractions" that could slow, stop, or reverse your progress.

Like many wonderful teachers and writers, Donna includes personal anecdotes from her own life & her students (without being too specific or identifiable). This makes all of the precepts she covers much more realistic, attainable, and most importantly, worth making the effort for.

Another thing to be adored about Donna (and this book in particular): Donna doesn't sugar-coat anything. This is life, we all make mistakes, we are all imperfect - BUT - we are all also divine and capable. The potential is within us all (it always has been) and the author herself stands at a testament to the life-changing abilities of a genuine Yoga practice.

Simply put, I can easily see why this is must-read book #2 for the Yoga Teacher Training course I am taking ("Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit: A Return to Wholeness" being the first). This is another book that, in my opinion, each & every yoga practitioner should read - and re-read over the course of their journey

Wanna Bet?

This book was recommended to me by a wonderful physical therapist and yoga teacher here in Austin, Mark Uridel. The author was a student of Judith Lasater, a nationally respected yoga guru and physical therapist who, in my experience, walks the walk despite the difficulties of fame. Even if you can't quite release the high expectations that so often diminish a good read, read it anyway because it will exceed those expectations. I ran my highlighter dry, realized I was highlighting all but the glue words but grabbed another highlighter anyway. Farhi's love and understanding of the wisdom of yoga and its ancient, subtle guidance resonate with authenticity and relevance for our short blessed lives on this beautiful but suffering planet. I know, that's a lot of adjectives, but If you're not a kinder, wiser, more gratitude filled person after reading this book, then I owe you a beverage and I will forgo the use of adjectives for one hour.

As a newcomer to Yoga, two months, I really do not have the knowledge to choose the "right" book on that vast subject.
Having said that, this book could not have been better if it had been written for me specifically. I looked up Yoga books in Amazon's Kindle section and for whatever reason chose this one.

This book found me. Only explanation.

When I finish this book I shall read it again. It is so in depth I will learn more with each reading. It is also so accessible that this newcomer was not overwhelmed, confused or put off in any way on his first reading.

Le meilleur livre que j'aie trouve!- The best book I've found for Haitian Creole!

This book is absolutely amazing! I've been wanting to learn Haitian Creole for about a year now, but my concern was that I wouldn't be able to find resources of the same caliber that I've been accustomed to using for other languages (e.g. Living Language Ultimate French,etc.) Fortunately, I was wrong! In fact, there are actually some really good resources for Haitian Creole, but this book is by far THE BEST! The book is full of dialogues, and not the cheezy phrase dialogue you find in some books. The dialogues are realistic, practical, and actually entertaining. The book also has gorgeous illustrations and tons of practice activities as well as vocabulary both before each unit and in the glossary. My only complaint is that it didn't come with audio, but according to the author there are indeed audio cassettes floating around somewhere (apparently the book was originally made in 1991, hence cassettes*), but even so, the book is incredible. You should also be aware that this book is designed to be an intermediate course, meaning if you're just starting out you'll probably need something else before you decide to tackle it. I would recommend the "Creole Made Easy" series. This is definetly a must-have. UPDATE
So I've been using this book for some while now, and while I still believe that this is one of, if not, the best books for studying kreyol, I must admit that it is not withouth flaws. The biggest, is the lack of an answer key for the excercises. Also, you may want to supplement the book with soome type of audio for listening practice, and a dictionary (a real dictionary, not a phrasebook) as well. That being said, do not let that discourage you from buying it. I also would like to add that the author is also a great person. I had the chance to correspond with professor Prou via email regarding my concerns, more specifically with regard to the answer key. He informed me that a new edition will be coming out soon, possibly before the end of the year.

Great Book - Outrageous Price

I found this to be a very helpful book for learning intermediate Haitian Creole. But $491.55????? Is that a misprint or a joke? If not, then this a terrible disservice to the publisher, author, the language, the country and its people. I paid $29.95 for a fresh, new copy from a Haitian owned business on Long Island, NY. And geezawhiz, if you really want to learn Creole, for about another $22 over what is being asked for this book, I flew round-trip Baltimore MD / Port-Au-Prince this past January 2015.

Loads of Fun

LIke all the "Zack Files," this one is just tons of fun. I gave it to a fourth grader who resisted reading, and now I can't get him to give me my book back! Dan Greenburg has a wonderful ear for the way children think and talk. Well, how boys do, at any rate. I haven't found that girls get as big a kick out of it. But he creates preposterous situations and then resolves them, always with the sympathetic help (or, at least, noninterference) of the divorced Dad (what a surprise.).

My first grader loves the Zach Files series! He laughs out loud as I read to him. This was a great one for my son who has begun to have his share of little stretches of truth. He really enjoyed the story and learned a bit about the enjoyment of participating in a science fair too.

Zack Files Are a BIG Hit!

I have been reading this series to my 2nd grade class for a couple of months and they LOVE them! They whine when we have to stop reading and ask for them in any free moment. This one was a big favorite, having your teacher talk about butts is always unbelievably funny! ;) I have been reading these books since the series started years ago, I wish Mr. Greenburg was still writing them. My only complaint is that they are very short for $5 a pop.
