Two of the world’s leading scholars of the Aztec language and culture have translated Sahagún’s monumental and encyclopedic study of native life in Mexico at the time of the Spanish Conquest. This immense undertaking is the first complete translation into any language of Sahagún’s Nahuatl text, and represents one of the most distinguished contributions in the fields of anthropology, ethnography, and linguistics.

Written between 1540 and 1585, the Florentine Codex (so named because the manuscript has been part of the Laurentian Library’s collections since at least 1791) is the most authoritative statement we have of the Aztecs’ lifeways and traditions—a rich and intimate yet panoramic view of a doomed people.

The Florentine Codex is divided by subject area into twelve books and includes over 2,000 illustrations drawn by Nahua artists in the sixteenth century.

Book Eleven is a beautifully written and careful documentation of all of the animals and plants known to the Aztecs in the sixteenth century. As the volume with the most illustrations, Earthly Things allows the reader to look at the natural world through the eyes of the Aztec.

Bernardino de Sahag n (Sahag n ca. 1499-Ciudad de M xico, 1590), Espa a. Su nombre original es Bernardino de Rivera. Sahag n escribi en n huatl y castellano, y su obra es muy valiosa para la reconstrucci n de la historia del M xico anterior a la Conquista. Hacia 1520 Sahag n estudi en la Universidad de Salamanca. All aprendi lat n, historia, filosof a y teolog a. Hacia 1525 entr en la orden franciscana y en 1529 se fue a M xico en misi n con otros frailes, encabezados por fray Antonio de Ciudad Rodrigo. En 1536 Bernardino de Sahag n fund el Imperial Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Tlaltelulco. Desde el comienzo ense lat n all . El prop sito del Colegio era la instrucci n acad mica y religiosa de j venes de la nobleza nahualt. Bernardino estuvo luego en conventos de Xochimilco, Huejotzingo y Cholula;fue misionero en Puebla, Tula y Tepeapulco (1539-1558);definidor provincial y visitador de la Custodia de Michoac n (1558). It inspired me to go into the field of Neuropsych...

I found this book in my junior year as an undergraduate. At the time I was waivering about my future in any area of psychology which was disconcerting as it was my major. Mr. Jospeph's book was given out in an intro. to Neuropsychology course. The book was thick with information, but it was accessable enough that it did not overwhelm me as a new comer to neuropsychology. There were also elelements of personal philosophy that appeared regarding the function of the brain and the reason it works the way it does which appealed to my mind set. The book is also well designed in its chapter and section lay out especially compared with the more circuitous presentation of information offered in other books on the subject. It does tend to focus less on assessment than it does on pathology. This book is broad in its review of the subject while providing a good number very specific facts. This book, though it is nearly a dozen years old, provides an excellent starting point for those who are interested in brain and behavior relationships and who are new to the field. I still find myself thumbing through this book all the time, and thus I must highly recommend it. By the way neuropsychology will be my area of emphaisis in my doctoral studies, and I blame this book for my fascination with it.

About the Author
David Hall is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at El Paso. Roger Ames is Professor of Philosophy and Director of Chinese Studies at the University of Hawai'i. Together they have written THINKING THROUGH CONFUCIUS (1987), ANTICIPATING CHINA (1995), and THINKING FROM THE HAN (1998) in addition to authoring many books individually.

Two Books In One

Democracy of the Dead: Dewey, Confucius, and the Hope for Democracy in China is an impressive attempt at dialogue between Confucianism and American Pragmatism on the subject of fostering democratic reforms in China. It is both a history of philosophy text, highlighting Dewey's thought and subsequent Pragmatist scholars, liberalism, and Confucianism, and a polemic about the limitations of liberal thought in China. Although some acquaintance with the texts interpreted by the authors is recommended, the authors' synopses are trustworthy and ably and judiciously given. There are also generous quotes and and a and a nine-page bibliography provided.
Admittedly, I was skeptical about the authors' project, which seemed like a desperate attempt to bridge two subjects, pragmatism and Confucianism, that are both equally unprofitable, with a popular item in the news, China. I wanted an appealing interpretation of Confucianism, that would allow me to understand the cultural divide between east and west more easily. I was also interested in any study about pragmatism, which, as the authors also argue, deserves more respect. Last, I wanted a framework to understand Korean and western dialogue, since Korean interpretations of Confucianism are also relevant to Chinese reform historically, and are also a factor in Korea's relations with western countries. The book satisfied my demands more than satisfactorily.
Some readers may be angered by the authors' use of Deweyan Pragmatism to criticize traditional liberalism, but the authors have good reason. Dewey did have a small role in Chinese educational reform before the Communist Party assumed control in 1949. Dewey, and pragmatism in general, are both better exemplars of distinct American realities than liberalism. Also, using pragmatic terms, the authors couch Confucian concepts in a way more palatable and approachable.
The authors argue, that a Confucian interpretation of democracy is possible. This Confucian democracy is useful as a tool for political reform. And then, by using Deweyan thought, it is possible for Chinese and American reformers to share ideas for reform in both countries. The book, therefore, is ultimately a practical one.
The authors eschew nationalistic and philosophical bias, which is necessary for productive dialogue. This is not a book that celebrates western values over eastern ones. It has relevance also in Korea, yet, ironically, it will not convince Americans of the need for reform in their own country, especially if readers refuse to abandon implicit faith in liberal thinking. This is not a book about dead things, but a very lively, well-written, timely offering..

An Excellent (and comical) novel about family

A Late Divorce is one of my very favorites novels. This ordinary tale about the late divorce of a middle-aged couple, one of whom is in a mental institution, is told from the perspective of each member of the family: children, their spouses and mates, grandson,etc. I have rarely laughed so much, or been touched so much, by the insightful description of the Kaminka family and their travails over a failed marriage, real estate and conflict. The scene with the rabbis at the mental institution is literary hilarity at its best...A wonderful work, original, illuminating and FUNNY!

Moments of Brilliance but not as good as his other work

A short synopsis - the family patriarch returns to Israel from America to seek a divorce from his estranged, and institionalized wife who is living in an institution. Along the way in a James Joyce-like fashion, we hear from each key character in the family dynamic. The young grandson, the son, the beautiful daughter-in-law, the son-in-law, the daughter, and of course the patriarch and his wife themselves.
Some of the chapters are absolutely inspired, electric, and brilliant. Others are weaker and more tiresome. This is at its core a book about family and its dynamics, not about Israel. Those looking for insight into Israeli society should try Yehoshua's brilliant novel, The Lover.
For hardcore Yehoshua fans, this is a must read, others would do better looking elsewhere.

Another excellent book by one of Israel's great writers

A. B. Yehoshua is considered by many to be one of the top three Israeli novelists. His books are not easy to read. They require the reader to think during the reading, to consider the character’s motivation, his and her psychology, and the effect of the happening upon others.
Every dysfunctional family is dysfunctional in its own way, as Tolstoy observed. In this novel, every individual in the dysfunctional family is dysfunctional in his and her own way and, in the hands of the master writer Yehoshua, in an interesting way. While the primary focus of the novel is the arrival of the father of the family from America to Israel to obtain a divorce from his institutionalized wife who had tried to kill him by stabbing him, each of his children, his two sons and one daughter, are in bad relationships needing a divorce, including one son who is in a homosexual relationship and mistreats his paramour badly.
Similarly, while the wife is hospitalized for attempted murder of her spouse, each of the children is, in effect, murdering their spouse, and while the institutionalized wife is clearly at least partially insane, so is everyone else in the tale, each in their own way.
We all know that severing a marriage with a divorce is a difficult endeavor, but there are unexpected difficulties when the father/husband attempts to persuade his wife the sign the divorce decree.
Yehoshua tells his tale from the perspective of each of the characters, usually it takes a page or two before we realize who is talking. This prompts us to wonder who the speaker is and gives a deeper dimension to the novel when we realize that the speaker could be someone we are surprised to hear from and is saying what is being said.
Seeing events from the perspective of different persons is not unique. We know, of course, of the four different takes of the life of Jesus in the New Testament. In that case, each is in many ways not the same as the others. There is also Faulkner's famous "The Sound and the Fury," where each of four persons sees the same event from their own perspective. "A Late Divorce" is unlike both of these. Like "The Sound and the Fury," each narrator sees the same event, but Yehoshua's presentation is deeper than Faulkner's: we learn more about the psychology and humanity of each narrator.

great, if a little longer than usual, hangover cure!

Gemma visits the home of dragon Chief Devon, to complain about the raise in the tithe due from the villagers. Devon sees Gemma as a means to an end to prevent a rival Clan member becoming Chief. They both get more than they bargained for.

A lovely little tale, nothing too heavy, too complicated. A perfect...wait for it...wait for it...HANG OVER CURE if ever there was one!!

Gemma knows she owes the village wealth to the goldsmiths who work for the Bluewing dragons, but hiking the tithe up 30% is just a bit too much. So off she goes to confront Devon, and lands up betrothed to the darn man. Her parents are overjoyed. She, not so much! I liked Gemma, she stood up to Devon. She has a voice and is not afraid to use it! I loved how she wound him up, having him search for her all over the castle to stave off her boredom!

I do like these dragons! They have hoards of gold, right there in the depths of their castle! Devon often visits his hoard, just to find the peace and calm he needs. Gemma tries his patience, as the man, but the dragon knows. The dragon knows she is The One, his mate. He just needs to make her see it!

It didn't seem the 250 pages billed on Amazon. It seemed a lot shorter. Not a bad thing, just something I noted.

Some sexy bits, some dangerous bits, some funny bits and some emotional bits. All in all, a good read, a nice read, just not a brilliant one.

How can you not love a big, blue dragon?

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is the start of a new series for Ms. Nowlan and Billionaire Dragon’s Bride was fascinating for me. I haven’t read many dragon shifters but Devon Bluewing is certainly a prime specimen. He is big, he is gorgeous, he is a magnificent dragon…and sorta pompous, in a good-to-read way. He is a dragon stuck in the middle of the “old” and “new” ways of the Dragon council and at the very beginning of the book, he is backed into a corner and must find a wife within a short amount of time. Enter Gemma Teeley, a Goldsmith from the village. Literally! Devon has an epiphany, and declares Gemma will be his wife (in two weeks’ time) rather than listening to what she had come to his castle to say.

It was fun watching Devon develop feelings for Gemma and for Gemma to start to “fall in line” with Devon’s decrees. Add in some mystery and hijinks and you have a great story and a wonderful start to a new series. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Billionaire Dragon's Bride is an enchanting magical romance that will have your heart pounding with excitement.

This story features Devon, a Bluewing dragon shifter who is drop dead gorgeous, has women flocking to him like magnets, and his pompous powerful attitude would have the HULK bowing his head to him. Devon finds himself in a pickle. To keep his status as Head of Council he has to find a bride in three weeks time. Gemma Teeley a goldsmith, is an audacious, curvy, beauty, who goes to Devon's mansion to ask him to lower his bounty rule for the people in Gold Valley.

The story is filled with amazing impressive and engaging characters, the banter between Gemma and Devon is fantastic, vivid scene descriptions fabulous, life threatening incidents, heart wrenching moments, steamy earth-shattering heart-throbbing romance, and a wondrous ending that leaves you smiling and wanting more.

Incredible exciting well written read by a gifted author. The passion and power in this story is astonishing. If you love shifter romance this one is a reader's delight. In the world of shifter romance the possibilities are endless and fascinating. {I received an arc for an honest review}. Without reservations I highly recommend this book and the author.

Bitches Brew is still one of the most astonishing albums ever made in either jazz or rock. Seeming to fuse the two, it actually does something entirely more revolutionary and open-ended: blending the most avant-garde aspects of Western music with deep grooves, the album rejects both jazz and rock for an entirely different idea of how music can be made.

Excellent!

This is one of the finest books in the 33 1/3 series to date. Grella has the ability to write engagingly about a challenging, ground-breaking recording and discuss it with musical precision, without resorting to jargon. Not only does he discuss the provenance of Bitches Brew, he places the album in a wider context of pop culture and shows how its influence has extended far beyond the realm of jazz. A musician and a respected critic covering New York's new music scene, Grella has an ideal perspective from which to consider this important recording. I've loved this music for a long time. Grella helps me hear it anew.

So Who Needs Swing?

BITCHES BREW is called a fusion record, but a fusion of what? It's played by top-drawer jazz musicians who aren't even trying to swing; it's full of electric instruments, but without anything resembling a rock beat. Author George Grella calls it a funk record, albeit a funk record informed by the avant-garde music of such European composers as Edgard Varèse and Krzysztof Penderecki. It's deep, danceable grooves layered with ear-stretching improvisations, an in-the-moment ritual music blatantly subjected to studio manipulation like any other pop record. No wonder so many listeners just didn't get it; there was no shortage of reactionaries content to label it anti-jazz and call it a day.

Grella asserts that the album's influence is "everywhere and nowhere," a hazy nod at the John Zorn-Talking Heads-Sonic Youth Downtown art scene, but what can you say about an album that doesn't sound like any other musical recording, and was a clear and unambiguous influence on only one band, Weather Report? This is an outstanding book in the 33 1/3 series: Grella packs an amazing amount of cultural, historical, and technical analysis into a little over a hundred pages, and will make you eager to listen to these six demanding, unsettling, and deeply funky musical collages all over again.

Miles Davis fan or just curious, read this 33 1/3

This is excellent. The writing is really engaging, not academic and plodding, and it's about a fascinating album. I recommend it highly whether you know anything about jazz and Miles Davis or not. You get some real insight to the time and the culture of the time, and there's plenty for a fan of rock and soul and other types of music that was popular at the time. If you do know a lot about fusion jazz and Miles Davis, then I would say this is a must-read.

Great for learning some speed painting techniques

I have several 3dtotal books, Digital Painting Techniques vol 1-7, so I took a chance on this one. Great for learning some speed painting techniques. Photo bashing, making brushes in photoshop, timed paintings, blocking in and creating multiple concepts. The timed paintings are 2 hours, 1 hour, 30 minutes and even a 10 minute Noir concept. Most of the artwork is Sci-fi or fantasy but techniques can be used for anything. I highly recommend this book for digital artists that have the fundamentals down and want to learn how to crank out some ideas quickly or want to create something unique using these skill sets. Awesome gallery of artwork from various artists and their techniques.

Beautiful book with loads of ideas

Beautifully put together, with explanations that are straightforward to follow.

I learned a lot from the contributors. They give you ideas that are likely to change your approach to making art quickly. Especially in the field of using custom brushes, textures, flipping images around in unexpected ways to create new shapes, layering textures to create detail and realism, and so on.

Much of this is about how to create the impression of a scene, and then focus on the right details to bring it alive.

This book has made me a better artist.

Very informative and I will be utilizing what I learn in it for my artwork. The author has some very good painting videos on youtube that are great for people learning new techniques.
