A good tool for test prep.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is the intellectual part of the the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT). The test is "curved" which means that a raw score is converted to a cumulative distribution where you are ranked against approximately 6000 test takers, so a score of 95 on the test means you scored better than 95% of other test takers. This means that the raw score (percentage of questions answered correctly) does not reflect the curved score. For example, if the test is very easy perhaps 50% of candidates will score 85% on the test. This means that a raw score of 85% on this hypothetical easy test will actually give you a curved score of 50. To get into certain parts of the armed services requires better than a median (50) AFQT performance (Air force, Coast Guard, Marines, SEALS, Special Forces and Special Operations) in the core areas of Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematical Knowledge (MK), Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC). So candidates seeking entry into those areas will want to be well prepared for the test. Understanding instructions is a survival skill in the military, so verbal expression (VE), which is composed of (PC+WK) and receives double weight in computation of the final AFQT score. "So what?" You might ask. Consider these two hypothetical candidates: Candidate A scores 99 on the AR and MK test, but 0 on both WK and PC, while candidate B score 0 on AR and MK, but 99 on WK and PC. Candidate A will have an AFQT of 33 while candidate B will have an AFQT of 66. This means candidate B will likely be able to enter any service of their choice, while candidate A may not be able to get into any service. Though such a scenario is unlikely, it is demonstrates the importance of addressing weaknesses in the VE tests to getting a higher AFQT and thus giving you more military career options.

This is a very comprehensive test guide that combines DVD video (which are also available online), flash cards and practice tests (in the book and online). The book starts with practice tests for you to get a sense of where your current performance is. The core ( AR,MK, and VE) and AO, contain nothing that someone with a high school education would not know however, the technical sub-tests do require some specific knowledge that is outside a standard school curriculum. Though source material for the tests is not covered doing the questions should help you look-up the information you need to study.

As with all timed tests, speed getting to the correct answer is a factor, so strategies are covered that allow you to eliminate incorrect answers quickly. There is also guidance for your pretest prep and dealing with test stress. The book covers the difference between the computer-adaptive testing (CAT) and the traditional pencil and paper test to help with you tune your test preparation.

When enlisting in the military your ASVAB score will determine what jobs and opportunities are open to you. When you have a good ASVAB score you will be given more career path choices, which is why it is so important to be prepared for and to do well on this test. Kaplan's 2016 Premier ASVAB study guide will gives the guidance and skills needed to get a much higher score on the test. This book was very helpful and informative. The timed practice test were a great way to study and maximize my efforts. The book will guide you through how to study and gives explanations when you get wrong answers. I took my test two weeks after getting the book and made a 84 AFQT score.

Meditation by a Master

These are descriptions and explanations of meditation by the famous Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) gathered from his many talks in the Western world. Volume and page from the 8 volume Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda are cited for every selection. The editor has divided the book in half "Meditation according to Yoga" (practical aspects) and "Meditation according to Vedanta" (philosophical aspects).

In the foreward, Christopher Isherwood tells the reader not to be in a hurry to finish the book and take one extract at a time to ponder over. And the editor Swami Chetanananda cautions that this book is not a manual on meditation. A personal program requires the instructions of a qualified teacher who would teach according to the temperament and spiritual advancement of the disciple. These are powerful words, however, for a general audience. Swami Vivekananda was born to carry the Vedanta message to the Western world.

Roman “bullies” and Alamanni “victims”

This is a very interesting, original and, at times, fascinating book on the relations between the Alamanni, a confederation of Germanic tribes on the right bank of the Upper and Middle Rhine, and the Roman Empire between the third century and the fifth century, from the reign of Caracalla to their defeat and conquest by Clovis and his Franks.

The book's originality lays in the author's thesis, with John Drinkwater developing the case that the Germanic tribes along the Rhine, in general, and the Alamanni, in particular, did not represent a deadly threat to the Romans, or even to Gaul. Rather, Rome, ever since Julius Caesar and Arioviste, tended to use them and make them into terrifying "bugbears", playing on Romans' ingrained terrors going back to the Cimbri and the Teutons of the late second century BC. In a way, they were a kind of convenient "punching ball" each and every time that an Emperor needed to burnish his military credentials and win some quick victories for "internal consumption".

The author does not, however, go as far as to state that they were harmless, but the damage they could do was limited to frontier raids by war bands, mostly relatively small (the maximum for each war band seems to be about a thousand warriors). These raids, many of which came for further inland, as opposed to coming from the populations settled along the frontier, lead to harsh Roman reprisals. The real danger that they represented was in times of Roman civil war when they could (and did) take advantage of the undermanned frontier garrisons but, here too, they were reacting to their much more powerful neighbour.

The points are well-made, well-argued, thoroughly discussed, and mostly convincing. The rather revisionist conclusion drawn by the author - that the Roman Emperors deliberately magnified the threat that these tribes represented in order to justify the huge costs of maintaining larges forces on the Rhine and in Gaul - seems, at first look, difficult to dispute, although it is quite controversial.

The author's sections on Ammianus Marcellinus are particularly good and convincing as they show how the Roman author's biases lead him to magnify the threat on the Rhine frontiers. Julian and his entourage are presented as rather devious. According to Drinkwater, they largely engineered the troubles that lead to the Caesar's victory at Strasbourg, giving him the military glory he needed to challenge Constantius II, and destroying the latter's policy and alliances with the Alamanni. In addition, the author also questions the numerous "victories" that Valentinian the First won over them a decade later, reducing them to punitive expeditions and mostly small engagements.

After reading these fascinating and somewhat revisionist interpretations, I could not help wondering. Although I was not entirely convinced, it seemed clear that the "Germanic" threat had been often exaggerated by the Roman Emperors. I was not quite certain; however, to what extent this might have been the case. This is because the author tends to rather systematically minimize almost all Germanic incursions and to downgrade them to mere raids.

Regardless of whether you are entirely "sold" on the author's thesis or whether you remain somewhat sceptical, there is much more to this book that that. Three main additional items stand out - there are others as well, but to keep this review reasonably short, I will only mention these.

One is the author's skill in showing that most of these Germanic tribes, and the Alamanni in particular, mainly intended to integrate, and that this was mostly achieved through service in the Roman army. The examples of Alamanni officers found in the written sources and serving in the army show to what extent some of them achieved this. This is completed by the second element, which is the rather skilful use of archaeological findings that give glimpses on the arrival, settlement, living conditions and society of the Alamanni how it evolved over time, and how they seem to have mostly wanted to preserve close links with Rome and become part of the Empire.

The third element is that this book, beyond the thesis presented, is perhaps the most valuable of all. This is because it brings to (relative and partial) light the history of and life on a large part of the Rhine frontier and it largely succeeds in demystifying the "Barbarians". These were clearly not so "Barbarian" as the Roman propaganda tended to portray them. Moreover, they did not want to remain "Barbarian" at all: they seem to have wanted to become Romans...

After hesitating, because some of the author makes interpretations that are somewhat speculative and at times far-fetched to build his case, I will settle on five stars because this is a superb book and a must read for anyone interested on the Roman Empire, even if you do not end up convinced by the author...

The mutually beneficial but nevertheless abusive relationship between Romans and Alamanni

John F. Drinkwater has written an excellent book about the Alamanni, where he follows their development from their first appearance in the sources until their takeover by the Franks. It teaches you all you need to know about the Alamanni, and I would even say, all there is to know about them. I, in any case, am not planning to read any more books about them, I do not think that any other book could teach me more than is written in this book. In this respect, the book is fairly conclusive, only new archeological findings could probably further confirm or contradict its thesis. John F. Drinkwater makes thereby a convincing point that the Germani behind the Rhine frontier and the Alamanni among them in particular were never a serious threat to the Romans. On the contrary, they were constantly bullied by their Roman neighbors whose leaders were continually in a need to establish themselves as able generals and military leaders. Consequently, every emperor sought for himself and/or his minor successor(s) a magnificent battle and a glorious victory against the Alamanni, which would establish them as capable war leaders. Only like this could they ensure themselves of the loyalty of their troops; the 'crisis' of the third century was thus also to a certain degree overcome by the realization of the men at the top that they needed to 'stage' themselves in some way as capable military leaders. This whole bureaucracy of military and civil administration on the Rhine eventually kept itself going, until it finally broke down in the fifth century, to be replaced by nothing similar. The Franks who, in contrast to the Romans, would not draw any advantages out of the Rhine frontier would under a capable rex quickly overcome the Alamanni and conquer their territory.
The only negative point about this book that I can make from my point of view is that John F. Drinkwater sometimes argues the cases to an utmost extreme, even if I was believing him already for a long time and therefore was starting to feel bored. But I guess this is necessary to convince other historians and therefore best practice in the field. And as far as the prize is concerned, happily there are public libraries... But besides these minor nuisances, I can all in all warmly recommend this book to everybody who is interested in the origin, history and fate of the Alamanni.

expensive but well done

First it seems to me that academic and scholarly books are way overpriced. Paying almost a hundred dollars for a book is a lot to ask of the fan of the Roman history. That said, this is an excellent study of the relations between Rome and its Germanic neighbors, and raises a number of interesting new ways to look at this topic. For example, Drinkwater argues that the threat from Germanic neighbors, up until the 5th century, was greatly exaggerated by the Roman emperors for political reasons. I would recommend this book highly and gave it four stars instead of five because of the price.

Jan F. Kreider is the president of Kreider and Associates, LLC, a renewable energy and energy efficiency consulting firm in Boulder, Colorado. He is also Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he was the founding director of the Joint Center for Energy Management.

Peter S. Curtiss is a consulting engineer specializing in energy use simulation and analysis, process control, and distributed generation technologies. He runs an engineering consulting business in Boulder, Colorado.

Poor HVAC book

I highly recommend NOT purchasing this book. Unfortunately it was required by one of my classes. My teacher for the HVAC class I was taking was a poor teacher at best (an adjunct professor with no teaching or presentation skills). anyway due to my teachers extremely inconvenient short comings I was forced to turn to the book to learn anything. The book however is also lacking. the text of the book is extremely dull and not always clear and to hard to follow when giving explanations. However my major issue with this book is the example problems they are weak and to simple to use as guides for the homework problems for each chapter. I think mot people learn through example, which this book does a horrible job doing. Simply, spend your money else where.

Excellent reference book

This is an excellent reference book. Like many other engineering subjects, it's not necessarily something one can teach themselves just by reading it and working example problems. This is partly because there are often several methods for calculating heat loss, heat gain, etc., some of which work better than others in some situations. This book may not stand on its own with respect to teaching the supporting (prerequisite) subjects; heat transfer, thermodynamics, etc. If you buy this book, be sure you get the CDROM that comes with it (mine didn't, and I had to work though getting it separately). The CDROM has "clean" pages of charts, graphs, etc., which one will likely find useful in practice (such as the psychrometric charts). The CDRM also has lots of other data that help students and practicing workers find reasonable values for different kinds of insulation weather patterns, etc. Another thing to keep in mind it that every few years, ASHRAE reviews/revises/updates their standards. Thus, some of the information in this particular edition of the book may not be applicable a few years from now. Also, there are some non-trivial typographical errors, some of which might be due to having to revise the contents on a regular basis.

Beautiful but fragile.

If you need a recommendation for the story here it is: read this book. It is a wonderful exploration of relationships with character's you'll love and feel like you know personally. Five stars for this engaging masterpiece.

But, chances are, you are more interested in this particular edition. It is beautiful but fragile. A barcode sticker placed on the back removed some of the paint/dye/coloring on the back--not what you want when you are looking to purchase a nice copy of a book for your library. Not sure how it will hold up over time but the indication is that it won't be very good--at least not the images on the cover.

As an additional piece of information, this edition includes illustrations.

Very difficult to purchase music without reviewing it. This is not only more difficult than I expected, but also payed out in a cumbersome way...sheet for violin should be available separately from accompaniment to avoid unnecessary page turning. Overall, disappointing.

There must be dozens of books on how to draw comics, but even the best artists need to tell a good story. Who can teach them? Dennis O'Neil. A comics writer and editor for more than 20 years, O'Neil oversees DC Comics' Batman titles--one of the most successful comics franchises ever. In addition, he's a bestselling novelist, a screenwriter, and a writing teacher. So when it comes to storytelling, O'Neil knows his stuff. In this guide he delivers his knowledge in a succinct, no-nonsense style.

O'Neil explains three-act story structure and examines subplots, characterization, and methods for developing drama and suspense. He then applies these concepts to comics' specific forms: graphic novels, miniseries, maxiseries, and the rare megaseries (such as Batman: No Man's Land, a year-long über-narrative played out across five comics titles). As in good comics, words and images work together in this book. Every idea is illustrated by panels or pages from great moments in DC Comics lore. Especially illuminating are the script excerpts that come paired with the comic book pages they describe.

Strangely, the book ignores the visual side of comics writing. Modern comics scripts specify shots, angles, and blocking in movie-director fashion, but that craft is never addressed. (DC has a good opportunity here for a second volume.) However, what this book sets out to teach--storytelling--it does quite well. Aspiring comics writers won't just learn theory, they'll be empowered, because O'Neil provides a framework for crafting new tales. --J.B. Peck

Adult/High School-This witty, clear, and concise guide is tailored to those who want to create comics. O'Neil is adamant that there is no One True Way, although he stresses the importance of practice. He discusses story structure, characterization, script preparation, and other general writing topics. He also covers those more specific to comics writing such as miniseries, maxiseries, and continuity. O'Neil addresses the visual component of the art, the importance of page layout, and the relationship between the writer and the artist. He concludes with a short essay, "Writing Humor Comics," by Mark Evanier. The book is lavishly illustrated with black-and-white examples from various DC comics. In addition, the author includes many pages of scripts, which are usually juxtaposed with the finished page. He provides excellent advice and guidance for beginners. Although the examples focus on DC characters and stories, the content should have broad appeal. This is a nice balance to the many how-to-draw-comics books in most collections. Even for nonwriters, the book is interesting for the background look it provides into how comics are created.

O'Neil has been scripting comics professionally for nearly two generations, and he offers much good sense and valuable information about his craft. Although an ex-Marvelite endorsed in a foreword by Stan Lee himself, O'Neil's principal experience has been with DC, for whom he started with Batman and Superman and proceeded to most of the other titles in the company's catalog. He provides everything from a basic glossary, complete with visual examples, of scripting concepts to advice on characterization--something vulgarly and erroneously supposed not to exist in comics--to guidance on work habits and concludes by discussing the various kinds of comic books, broadly conceived. He exemplifies from DC's stable, which may make the book enticing to even the fan who isn't particularly interested in becoming a scripter. But above all, O'Neil addresses the universals of writing in a way that makes the book useful to all aspiring scripters, regardless of their knowledge of comics. Roland Green

One of the best books in a great series

The DC Comics Guides are great. And this is one of the best in the series. It gives clear cut practical advice alongside inspirational examples and hints. The structure of the book makes it easy to find that one thing you need, and this book has lots of information an aspiring writer needs. Compared to other books on the same subject, this one stands way above most.
