Arguably My Favorite Collection of Warrior Philosophy

By some fortuitous chance I stumbled upon this book when it was first released and have since devoured it over a dozen times, and it keeps getting better and the meanings continue to evolve. This is a collection of timeless works by some of the most brilliant military minds produced by the Samurai during the height of their glory (1198 to 1623).

Some of the works are martial regulations laid down by a lord to govern his retainers, some are last words passed from a father to his son at death, and others are simply philosophical works that deal with character, strategy and tactics, and the tenants of Bushido. There is even a rare english translation of the military genius Takeda Shingen of Kai. I am also a big fan of Kato Kiyomasa who was not only a great general, but one of the master castle architects including Kumamoto-jo, perhaps my favorite in Japan.

This book is truly one of the greats. It is a window into the minds of brilliant men. The concepts are applicable to martial awareness, business, and just life in general. If there is one underlying theme prevailing throughout all the pieces, it is simply to hold yourself to a higher standard. I couldn't possibly recommend this book enough.

I'm really glad that I chose to purchase this book. There are numerous tid-bits of wisdom that really help to drive home the concept of "Serving" . I would suggest anybody in the military or firefighters/police read this.

I read this book along with A Brief History of the Samurai. It was a good companion piece in understanding some of the motivations of the Samurai and it's effect in historical terms.

Book Falling Apart

This book is a good read. It's very informative and it arrived on time.

However, within 4 weeks of using it, it started to fall apart. The pages were literally falling out. It could be due to the fact I bought it used, but still and all it shouldn't have been in that bad of a condition. The seller assured me it was in "good" condition and good isn't pages falling out.

Great Book For Young Girls

With rich illustrations and descriptions, this book captures the attention and sparks the imagination of young girls. The Thea Stilton series is a fast paced and exciting series, and this book is no exception. It has an easy mystery just like in other books, but it has a little more action adventure and more of Thea. I think this book is well worth the buy. The only thing I could point out that I don't like is it doesn't have as much cultural history and trivia tidbits as in other books, since it takes place in America. However, they make up for it by incorporating some Egyptian mythology, so that was an interesting twist. Overall, I recommend this book, along with the entire series, because it entertains, educates, and encourages creativity.

Great series for kids.

My nine year old daughter loves this series and all the Geronimo Stilton books. She reads them over and over again! Though some of the words are mouse lingo, the story lines are great and kids get a glimpse of things about the world outside of their immediate environment. This book for example talks about the NYC Marathon which prompted my daughter to ask questions.

Great Introduction to the Syriac Language

I've been wanting to learn Syriac for some time, but have been a bit intimidated by the available materials. So I was very happy to find this excellent text book.

Dr. Kiraz is, I suspect, and very engaging teacher. It's rare to find myself laughing out loud when studying a classical language, but Dr. Kiraz makes the process profoundly enjoyable.

He gives a graded introduction to the script - probably the hardest thing for many beginners - and the teaches major grammatical concepts clearly through a series of his own exercises. The 6th chapter of the book then gives extended reading from a wide range of ancient and modern Syriac literature.

An additional help is audio materials supporting all the readings in the book - these audio recordings can be downloaded from the Gorgias Press website, and are invaluable to get pronunciation, cadence, and a "feel" for the language. The book is also significantly less expensive direct from Gorgias...

This book is, of course, introductory, and I'm moving on to more advanced grammars before I get to the Peshitta new testament. But as an introduction to rich, fascinating, and beautiful language, the text book has no peer that I've seen.

Must have to communicate foundry arts intelligently

Excellent read. This book is NOT a how to guide... it is a selection of definitions and terms for concepts used in foundry operations. I am a home foundry hobby operator (aluminum, brass and bronze)... it has opened my vocabulary and understanding of term and applications of concepts to my operation.
If you can understand the language of a hobby... your appreciation and understanding of it moves forward and allows you to talk intelligently about it. And communication is important in explaining a problem or applying an operational concept.

There is a great deal of information presented in this book, though organization is a bit loose. The real problem with it, however, is presentation. it is poorly written, apparently unedited, and badly printed.
Some of the definitions offered in the "glossary" are circular, with one definition referring to another, etc.

About the Author

Professor John Egan, is Head of the Department of Marketing at Regent’s University, London. He is Chair of the Academy of Marketing, the major UK academic marketing organisation, and Chair of the Learning Advisory Group, formally the Senate, of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is a Chartered Marketer, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Marketors.

Professor Egan has a long publishing career and is the Editor of The Marketing Review and on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Political Marketing and Marketing, Intelligence & Planning. He has authored books on Marketing Communications and Public Relations and his textbook ‘Relationship Marketing’ is now in its fourth edition and has been translated into Russian, Simple Chinese and Mandarin.

He entered academia in 1997 following a career in luxury retailing initially with American Department Stores and later with Mappin & Webb, Crown Silversmiths, and Garrard, Crown Goldsmiths.  Prior to his appointment at Regent’s University Professor Egan was at London South Bank University where, in addition to his academic marketing responsibilities, he was Faculty Director of Marketing and External Communications responsible for all aspects of marketing in the Faculty.

High level overview of the job responsibilities of a DBA

This book is a high level overview of the job responsibilities of a DBA. A DBA may work on many different tasks with an organizations data and have many different responsibilities across organizations. This book covers everything that you might be asked to do as a DBA, where ever you may be working. The book is vendor independent which is nice because that gives you an understanding of concepts and work flow that are not tied to a specific product. Craig S. Mullins tells us that the book can be a class text book or a reference book or a guide book for educating management as to the job role of a DBA. There are also many other books referenced throughout the book which offers direction to readers, should you want a more in depth understanding of a concept. So as an introductory text on the job of a DBA this book will fit the bill, but remember it is a high over view of the responsibilities of a DBA so you will have to augment this text with others and with product specific information/ texts. Either way as a student of Library and Information Science I am very pleased with the book. It's also easy to read if you take a mature approach to studying, very clear text and layout, no color pictures, thin paper so be careful with turning pages and drinks that might spill! I just got the book, it was just published, so I have not read much, but flipping through it I can tell that the reader will get a very good foundational understanding of what a DBA does. And wouldn't you know that is what kind of book I was looking for.

One of The Best for DBA s

I use this book ( 1st edition for last 2 years and 2nd edition just a month ago) for my Undergraduate ( BSc in IT ) and Masters , MSC in ISM , program. An excellent book to be used as a Text book for any Computer science Database Administration Courses.

In the second Edition , which took nearly 10 years from the 1st edition,
includes an entirely new chapter on the DBA's role in regulatory compliance.

This is new stuff , for last 10 years... which covers new material on data breaches, auditing, encryption, retention, and metadata management.
But , the old edition a still a good Text fo any DBA , courses..
