Shane Dawson shared some of his best and worst experiences in I Hate Myselfie, the critically acclaimed book that secured his place as a gifted humorist and keen observer of millennial culture. In this new collection of original personal essays, Shane goes even deeper, sharing never-before-revealed stories from his life, giving readers a no-holds-barred look at moments both bizarre and relatable, from cult-like Christian after-school activities, dressing in drag, and losing his virginity, to hiring a psychic, clashes with celebrities, and coming to terms with his bisexuality. Every step of the way, Shane maintains his signature brand of humor, proving that even the toughest breaks can be funny when you learn to laugh at yourself.

This is Let's Pretend This Never Happened and Running With Scissors for the millennial generation: an inspiring, intelligent, and brutally honest collection of true stories by a YouTube sensation-turned one of the freshest new voices out there.

Review
Praise for It Gets Worse:

"Dawson exhibits his signature brand of twisted humor and neuroses in his second volume of personal essays. [His] journey is fraught with sadness…and comedy…His self-deprecating and outrageous humor…deserves comparison to David Sedaris." (Publishers Weekly)

“These 13 essays collected here are…humorous, but some are quite moving…One a humor scale of 1 to 10, 1 being meh and 10 being a hoot, Dawson’s essays earn a solid 7. Teen fans of David Sedaris will enjoy Dawson’s perky essays." (Booklist)

"Shane Dawson brings us possibly – no, definitely – the most hilarious read of summer. In this uproarious essay collection, Dawson unleashes all his wit and explores his mortifying childhood and every awkward moment as he came to terms with bisexuality. Overflowing with humor and sharp observations on the struggles surrounding modern culture, It Gets Worse is comfort food for the millennial soul."
  (Sunset Magazine)

“If you're a fan of his, it's safe to say this is already pre-ordered for you, but if you haven't been introduced to this YouTube sensation, I'd recommend checking him out if you're a millennial who loves to laugh.”  (Bustle.com)

Praise for I Hate Myselfie:
“Though Shane is infamous for his biting wit and crude humor, I Hate Myselfie is as much heart as it is crass.... [It] proves that laughing at yourself can help overcome even the most embarrassing experiences.... Shane may 'hate his selfie,' but his millions of fans will love it.” (AccessHollywood.com)

"This book is a haven for difference in a sea of more of the same with YouTuber books. The essay approach really worked for the book." (The Guardian)

"Like Dawson’s previous book, I Hate Myselfie, It Gets Worse is a collection of humorous autobiographical essays...laced with both bracing honesty and Dawson’s signature humor."
  (Entertainment Weekly (ew.com))

OMG YES!
By Mario Chegini
I am just about halfway done with the book and I just have to say, it has to be one of the funniest books I've ever read! The book starts out kind of slow and introduces the reader to Shane's childhood, his relationship with his brother, and his battle with his sexuality. 5 stars for the content. It later starts to pick up and we learn about his adolescent awkwardness and his college stories. Now, about the actual printing and shipping of the book: My book arrived in a yellow Amazon envelope slightly crushed and bent, and upon reading the book, there seem to be black dots on certain pages. C'mon Amazon! But anyway, this is a great book!

my new bible
By Olivia Weiss
I've watched Shane on YouTube since 2010 and I blame him for my sense of messed up humor and I wouldn't have it any other way. So when Shane wrote this book I preordered it immediately and I'm so happy I did. This book will make you laugh and teach you to stay humble. As soon as I got it in the mail I couldn't put it down! It distracted me from my anxiety and kept me smiling and laughing. I really recommended this book to anyone with a messed up sense of humor or if you're looking for a quick laugh.

Relatabe, self-depricating and humorous
By T. Skylar
There's more self-deprecating humour where that came from! I rarely, if ever pre-order books, but l pre-ordered It Gets Worse by Shane Dawson on the basis of how much l enjoyed his first book. Shane was one of the first YouTubers l truly paid attention to. He has become synonymous with the very word "YouTuber". I found Dawson to be very relatable and engaging in his New York Times best seller I Hate Myselfie and by the end of the book l found myself wanting more. Well, more has arrived in the form of Shane's new volume, It Gets Worse.

Despite it's rather depressing title, it is not a negative book and it offers a glimmer of light for all struggling teenagers. While l can't relate on a personal basis to every (or even most) events described by Shane, he has the ability to be personable and connect with his audience. As proven with his first volume, his ability to reach his audience begins, but doesn't end behind a computer screen. Dawson is witty, charming and displays surprising dept. He's watchable but also happens to be highly readable as well. Whether it's stories of his family pretending to win the lottery or a difficult heartbreak, the book is hard to put down.

I must say l like Shane's second book more than the first. While l Hate Myselfie was a funny collection of first experiences and essays of embarrassing stories, It Gets Worse picks deep at the metaphorical scabs on the YouTuber's skin. We find here a more mature Shane Dawson —that's not to say he gets all philosophical on us plans to stop making Galaxy videos— he's just more comfortable with himself and aware. There are some darker moments and references to suicide and Dawson wanting to die as a teenager, but those are not including for comedic purposes. They are honest thoughts he had as he went through adolescence. The beloved YouTuber has won his battle with depression and perhaps his tale can inspire his following. When Shane tackles his confused feelings about his own sexuality, unrequited loves and life lessons learned he allows himself to be completely exposed.

Most adults would likely gain very little from reading It Gets Worse as they may not completely grasp Shane's brand of humour. l believe reading about these experiences can be truly beneficial for a teenager going through the hardships that come with adolescence. It gives them a sense of understand and tells them that they are understood. Besides, it's not all gloom and doom, there are some laugh-out-loud moments in these pages!

For the record, I'll still watch every Galaxy video you make Shane. 4/5 stars.

MUST READ!
By Ken McCrank
Brilliant! If you have a teen (or pre-teen) boy, this is a MUST have. It's got some really great advice...many things as parents we try to tell our teenager, but it doesn't get through to them. This is an excellent way to get some of those great ideas and advice to your teen boy, without it being "ugh, mom and dad AGAIN!". Highly recommended. Have purchased a copy for each teenage boy in our house. Will buy a 3rd when the time comes.

Good for Preteens and Young Teens
By Susan Stitch
I gave this book to my twin 14 year-old boys and asked them to read through several sections. I don't know exactly which sections they read, but both of them spent a decent amount of time with the book (that means an hour for one of them and a couple of hours for the other). Now, telling their mom what they thought of the book seemed like a dance for them. They didn't want to act like they had learned anything (because of course, 14 year-olds know everything), so both of them said it was kind of common sense. Well, maybe the chapter on wearing deodorant and brushing your teeth were, but I think that there were a lot of chapters on topics they hadn't even considered, like grilling a steak, changing a tire, and finding a stud in the wall!

I also had my 24 year-old daughter read through it, and I read several chapters. We both thought that it had great topics and that it was a good manual to have around so that you could learn things at just the right time. We did think that several chapters were very shallow -- especially in the section on impressing girls. It includes topics such as talking to a girl for the first time, planning dates, and meeting the girls' parents. I thought it was lacking in the areas of how to treat a girl with respect (for example, it never even mentions opening doors for her), ideas of what to do on a first date (such as determining what she is interested in), or double dating etiquette. As a mom, I was also a bit disappointed in the the social skills and manners section. It talks about how to make a bed, but doesn't deal with manners items such as eating appropriately, phone and text etiquette, or tips on maintaining a conversation. I would have appreciated a section on how to find out more details about things -- who to talk to or what books to read.

This is a good intro manual for preteen and young teen boys, but I would recommend a detailed follow up for those beyond 13 or 14 with much more information about character-building, leadership traits, common courtesy, and relationship skills.

Very helpful!
By Tonya Speelman
Anything and everything you ever wanted to know is in here! Although it says for men, I think it has a lot of information that is useful for everyone. Some stuff I was really interested in, such as the meats.

We started off with girls and dating. I like Jonathan's style, he makes it fun, he does everything step by step and then he adds a fun fact at the end. He makes it a bit hilarious at times as well.

Then we into social skills and manners, work ethics, money management, grooming and clothing. I really think he covered so many excellent topics. I think when boys leave home this would be a wonderful book to give them, so when they say, what did mom say about ironing my shirts, oh yea, here we go, step by step. Awesome information. Oh yea and I won't burn my shirt maybe as much!!!

Then we went into sports, every sport, how to throw a football, basketball, baseball, play golf then on to cars and then cooking. Finally we ended with tools.

This is such a fabulous resource. We must come up with something similar for girls. I really believe this is an excellent resource that they will come to rely on often until they get the hang of being on their own! Their friends might even borrow it!

I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Chase Jackson is my hero!
By Stephanie Newcomb
This was an excellent book to read. Knowing it was geared towards young adults and knowing I'm in my upper 30s I was nervous it might not capture my attention. Not only did it capture my attention but I read it fast...then moved on to the next one quickly and finished that one too. I fell in love with the characters. If you are in high school or have ever been in high school you can TOTALLY relate with the main character Chase Jackson and the struggles he has to find himself and fit into the high school scene. You can't help but fall in love with him and his friends. I found myself carving out 10 minutes here and there in my day to read because it was addicting!
My only critique (while still giving it 5 starts, mind you) is some editing misses but I am sure they will get worked out with the next edition.
And honestly, I'm kind of bummed that there's only 1 more book in the series. Wish it would just keep going. Good work Mr. Janney! Well done on this series. I love to ready but really struggle to find time and in the span of about a month I've read the Outlaw and Infected. It takes a special kind of writing style and content to hold my attention like that!!!

Acceptable but not great - Surprised at all the 5 star reviews.
By Atlantan Reader
Hmm... Okay. I know I'll be going against the majority of reviews here, but this book was merely acceptable. When I saw that Outlaw had four and a half stars, I expected a real page turner, with snappy dialogue, great character development, and a good super powers/magic system. Instead, Origins is a run of the mill YA adventure suited more for the older teen crowd than full adults. The plot goes something like: Formerly nerdy boy gets powers. Boy begins to play sports. Girls start to like him. There's a bully. He has problems at home. He becomes a hero.

There is precious little that's original.

The writing, while acceptable, isn't exceptional. There are repetitive moments in the book - like the many detailed play by play football games that are described. There is some decent character development at times, like with Hannah, one of the MC's love interests, but many of the other characters are flat, almost caricatures. Also, there are a few somewhat odd... almost promotional plugs in the book that are discordant. For instance, neither the main character or any other major character is portrayed as all that religious, but, about halfway through the book, the MC goes to a church and discovers that his assistant coach is a deacon there. Pretty much immediately the assistant coach writes the MC a check, from the church, to help out with the MC's money problems at home. The MC then says/thinks, "Before I got into my car, I glanced at the check. It was for two thousand dollars. I drove home with shaking hands, crying, praying, and laughing." Little PSA type things like this were a bit discordant for me.

So, I'll stick to my guns. I have no idea why so many people have rated this book so highly. It isn't horrible, but it also isn't great. Origins is just a run of the mill, quasi-religious, young adult super hero story.

and I thought my high school years were messed up
By H. Bala
I guess the gentrification of downtown Los Angeles didn't stick. Alan Janney's The Outlaw: Origins paints 2017 as a bleak year for us Californios, what with racial unrest triggered by a controversial law just passed in California that makes life much harder for illegal immigrants, what with lawlessness rampant in the 'hood, what with a masked crimefighter roaming the streets, serving up a mean brand of justice. What we readers know - and what the characters in the book don't - is that the vigilante is actually a 17-year-old kid named Chase Jackson, him what juggles multiple life styles. In Glendale's Hidden Spring High, Chase is the backup quarterback, a nobody who tried out and shocked everyone by making it to the team. Chase attends one of the more posh schools in the state, never mind that he's its most broke seeker of knowledge. His shabby, old-ass Toyota cowers in shame next to the gleaming SUVs of the wealthy students. You instantly root for the kid.

4 out of 5 stars for The Outlaw: Origins, a ripper of a read even with its flaws. Alan Janney neatly folds in high school drama and football with urban superheroics. Chase is a protagonist that's easy to like. He's not perfect. He doesn't always say the right things. He's barely treading water with his complicated relationship issues. Yep, the boy is just clueless enough to make him interesting. Chase is in love with his childhood best friend, Katie. But he's flirting with the head cheerleader who he suspects is using him purely for status, seeing as how he's killing it lately on the football field. And I won't even go on about the starlet that he ends up rescuing from a mugging...

Chase's barrelful of angst is offset by the occasional action sequence. Except that the origin of Chase's superpower isn't addressed or even that much delved into. There's an element of Jekyll & Hyde and, more often than not, bouts of disorientation and excruciating pain. Some ambiguity lifts when Chase does refer to his condition as a disease (Loc 640), although that's probably more the writer's slip of the tongue. The 411 behind Chase's origin drops in the sequel (Infected: Die Like Supernovas).

Chase finds himself a celebrity on two fronts. On the gridiron, he's now being evaluated by the media and the scouts. Meanwhile, his alter ego's exploits are also gaining him massive press. The football sequences are as riveting as the vigilante smack-downs. Janney really knows how to tell these come-from-behind rallies in exciting fashion. On the crimefighting side, Chase does eventually end up with his own nemesis, and the interesting thing is that it's a villain that crosses over from one section of Chase's life into another.

I had a concern that the writer introduced that whiff of social commentary only to not do crap about it, but that was before I started reading the sequel. For now, the protests and riots staged by the Latino community serve merely as backdrop, an accentuating element. I wished, though, that Katie had more of an opinion about what's going on since she is half-Puerto Rican and all. What's kind of killing me is that Chase is so oblivious when it comes to relationships. C'mon, no one's that oblivious. Anyway, this is a read I couldn't put down, never mind that Chase's romantic complications get a bit too nutty and that, sometimes, the dialogue doesn't come off natural. Above all else, Janney is a riveting storyteller. He took me back to my high school days when I was pretty much like Chase: dumb, confused, feeling alone. Except I couldn't leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Fifty Quick Ideas to Improve Your User Stories, by Gojko Adzic, David Evans

This book will help you write better stories, spot and fix common issues, split stories so that they are smaller but still valuable, and deal with difficult stuff like crosscutting concerns, long-term effects and non-functional requirements. Above all, this book will help you achieve the promise of agile and iterative delivery: to ensure that the right stuff gets delivered through productive discussions between delivery team members and business stakeholders. Who is this book for? This is a book for anyone working in an iterative delivery environment, doing planning with user stories. The ideas in this book are useful both to people relatively new to user stories and those who have been working with them for years. People who work in software delivery, regardless of their role, will find plenty of tips for engaging stakeholders better and structuring iterative plans more effectively. Business stakeholders working with software teams will discover how to provide better information to their delivery groups, how to set better priorities and how to outrun the competition by achieving more with less software. What's inside? Unsurprisingly, the book contains exactly fifty ideas. They are grouped into five major parts: - Creating stories: This part deals with capturing information about stories before they get accepted into the delivery pipeline. You'll find ideas about what kind of information to note down on story cards and how to quickly spot potential problems. - Planning with stories: This part contains ideas that will help you manage the big-picture view, set milestones and organise long-term work. - Discussing stories: User stories are all about effective conversations, and this part contains ideas to improve discussions between delivery teams and business stakeholders. You'll find out how to discover hidden assumptions and how to facilitate effective conversations to ensure shared understanding. - Splitting stories: The ideas in this part will help you deal with large and difficult stories, offering several strategies for dividing them into smaller chunks that will help you learn fast and deliver value quickly. - Managing iterative delivery: This part contains ideas that will help you work with user stories in the short and mid term, manage capacity, prioritise and reduce scope to achieve the most with the least software. About the authors: Gojko Adzic is a strategic software delivery consultant who works with ambitious teams to improve the quality of their software products and processes. Gojko's book Specification by Example was awarded the #2 spot on the top 100 agile books for 2012 and won the Jolt Award for the best book of 2012. 50 quick ideas to improve
By Lisa Crispin
This new book by Gojko Adzic and David Evans is deceptively slim. It's not just 50 ideas to improve your user stories. It's 50 experiments you can try to improve how you deliver software. For each experiment, David and Gojko provide you with information and resources "to make it work".

One chapter that has caught my eye is "Use Low-Tech for Story Conversations". Gojko and David advise holding story discussions in rooms with lots of whiteboards and few big tables. When everyone sits at a big conference table, looking at stories on a monitor or projected on a wall, they start tuning out and reading their phones. Standing in front of a whiteboard or flip chart encourages conversation, and the ability to draw makes that conversation more clear. Participants can draw pictures, connect boxes with arrows, write sentences, make lists. It's a great way to communicate.

I've always been fond of the "walking skeleton", identifying the minimum stories that will deliver enough of a slice to get feedback and validate learning. Gojko and David take this idea even further, they put the walking skeleton on crutches. Deliver a user interface with as little as possible below the surface now, get feedback from users, and iterate to continually improve it. As with all the ideas in the book, the authors provide examples from their own experience to help you understand the concept well enough to try it out with your team.

David and Gojko understand you're working in a real team, with corporate policies and constraints that govern what you can do. Each story idea ends with a practical "How to Make it Work" section so you can get your experiment started.

Again, it's not just a book of tips for improving your user stories. It's fifty ways to help your customers identify the business value they need, and deliver a thin slice of that value to get feedback and continue to build it to achieve business goals. It's a catalog of proven practices that guides you in learning the ones you want to try.

Immensely practical book - Perfect for anyone who needs to write and understand user stories
By Barry J. Kurtz
Really like the way this book is laid out - Simple and direct. Every idea structured as follows: 1) The concept; 2) Key benefits 3) How to make it work.

Includes many techniques I use all the time: "Start with the outputs"; "Split by capacity"; "Simplify outputs". Some were variations on familiar concepts: "When all else fails, slice the hamburger"; "Forget the walking skeleton, put it on crutches" (the reference to Cockburn's Crystal Clear made me smile). Then there were ideas that got me thinking - "Use hierarchical backlogs"; "Investigate value on multiple levels"; "Split learning from earning".

Also, don't overlook the bibliography. Listed a number of articles/books I had never read before some of which were as interesting book itself and felt like a bonus.

Overall an enjoyable and useful book on the subject. Deserves to be in your reference library. Highly recommended.

Amazon.com Review
Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn't competed as a bodybuilder since he won the Mr. Olympia title in 1980, but he remains the sport's No. 1 icon. He hosts an annual bodybuilding contest in Columbus, Ohio, and allows a column to be ghost-written under his name in a muscle magazine. Today's bodybuilders may have bigger muscles than Arnold ever did, but everyone inside and outside the iron game gives him credit for exponentially broadening the popularity of physique training.

With this updated Encyclopedia (it was originally published in 1985), Schwarzenegger wraps his huge arms around the entire sport. He hits the history of bodybuilding, the champions (he's quite generous in his praise of predecessors, contemporaries, and successors alike), the training systems. Some of the information is more bodybuilding lore than science; for example, exercises are said to "expand the rib cage" or develop the "inner" or "outer" chest, all physiological impossibilities. But they're still good exercises, and the book includes every movement imaginable for every muscle group.

If you love the sport of bodybuilding, you'll want this book in your library, if for no other reason than to feast your eyes on the hundreds of photos of the best physiques in the history of the sport. And, in a pinch, the 800-page encyclopedia can fill in nicely for a missing dumbbell. --Lou Schuler

Must have for anyone interested in bodybuilding on any level
By Alex
This book has everything you need to know about all aspects of bodybuilding. It starts with basic recommendation and training techniques for the beginner and ends with posing for bodybuilding competitions. The book is well organized, so it is very hard to get lost. In the first few pages, you will find the history of bodybuilding, but following it are the actual programs and sets of exercises that you can use for every workout. There is a beginner program, advanced program, and competition program. Each program has 2 levels of training listing exercises most suitable for each level. If you are a beginner, you can start with level 1 of the beginner training and then eventually move up as you see results. Or you can just start with a level that you see fit for your current shape, as I did. After all the programs, you will find information on how to correctly perform each of the exercises listed in training programs, all with big illustrations (you will see a lot of inspiring pictures of famous bodybuilders). You will also find many different exercises that you can use to alternate your workouts, and also nutritional programs to go with your training. Nutritional programs are divided into different levels as well. I have never used anabolic steroids, and I have no problem performing exercises listed in the book. Some of them may be hard, but not in the beginner training. That's why you shouldn't start with advanced training unless you feel comfortable. I started seeing results after as little as 2 weeks after almost no progress for last half a year before I picked up this book. Arnold's training hits all muscle groups, and some that many people simply miss/disregard, but that are essential for building the best physique. You don't need steroids to do any of the exercises or to workout for 2 hours a day. In fact, I actually enjoy my every workout more than ever. It is hard to describe 800 page book in a few words, so there are a lot of things in there that I didn't even mention. You just have to see for yourself. I can't speak for everyone, but I definately recommend it.

The Gospel of Arnold.
By James
I have been weight training for five years and can not stress enough the value of this book. For the first three years I listened to personal trainers and a few friends doing a fairly normal workout routine to change my overweight body. This produced little to no results. I met a bodybuilder two years ago that was a big Arnold fan and unknown to myself he gave me Arnold's beginner workout program. I started seeing results; however, I eventually stopped the program because I had hit stagnation. I did not have access to anything that would show me how to push my limits even further, just what "the trainers" told me again. Basically your average medium sets, medium reps, and circuit training workout programs. Enough to keep my current weight stable with the prospect of shedding a few pounds and to gain small amounts of muscle over the long term. The don't overtrain mentality 3-4 times a week! Great for some!

I wanted more, I'm human. Eventually I called up my then bodybuilding "personal trainer" friend and he reluctantly revealed to me this book; "his secret", that is actually available to everyone. I picked it up and started following Arnold's next program level. More results. I am now into the advanced programs and never felt healthier or happier with my body and can honestly say I have greater control over my physical appearance than I ever imagined possible. People that claim this book will overtrain you I do not believe have looked at the entire book or fully understand Arnold's fundamental arguments. Perhaps unfortunately they are also looking out for their own interests. We can't blame them though, they are human!

The beginner programs in this book used with proper weight for your body will show results and should not even come close to overtraining if you are using low weight. Yes, 6 days a week! What about time? If you have a career or have kids Arnold says wake up early. He asks how serious are you about wanting to change and control your body or what are your goals? I can not stress that enough and Arnold makes it clear to push yourself to realistic goals! Do not dive into the deep end. A good section in-directly speaking to overtraining (besides the one devoted to the topic) is the one on bodytypes. For example, Arnold's information tells you; If you have a natural athletic body you can probably start a bit harder. Where as an endomorph (gains fat easily) may want to focus on cardio more and getting up their energy level and fatigue resistance.

I would even argue a beginner could use his low level advanced programs lifting "the appropriate" level of weight and make gains without over-training. For example, let us pretend "joe beginner" can bench 100 pounds over 4 - 8 reps. When Arnold says do 6 sets of Bench presses starting with 15 reps he means start way lower than what you can do, maybe at 25-30 pounds, maybe 40 on a high enegry day and end on the 100. Eventually when fully rested, following that beginner level pyramid, doing 100 pounds for 4-8 reps will be a joke. Realize how many sets and exercises he is telling you to do and adjust accordingly! Don't start at 90 and then try and go to 150, you'll be dead for the next exercise, and will over-train! Lets say someone can bench 30 pounds for 4 - 8 reps, start at 8. For his programs to work, you have to suck up the pride and go as low as is necessary to not overtrain but finish the workout(This is all covered in his beginner section!). I have a secret for you..no one in the gym cares about how much your lifitng and if they do, you shouldn't. Arnold also mentions many other similar mind over body / environment ideas.

Negative reviews also mention Arnold took steroids. I imagine he did but steroids should never be used*. I believe Arnold's program can be used completely without supplements and give results. However, taking protein, glutamine, and some of the other modern supplements may help if you are feeling over-trained. If you are still, despite the supplements, as I said before lower the weight. Some bodies need supplements (sorry did I say supplements? Should have said "a proper diet"!). This is an unavoidable reality if you are burning over 1000 calories a day on training. Like Arnold points out look at safe supplements more like food (because that is where most modern supplements come from). If you are taking CLA, protein, vitamins, and appropriate amino acids you are really only altering your diet. Arnold's book does provide diets that will be giving you all these "supplements". (*Arnold makes it explicit that fat burners are fake enegry and steroids are off limits).

The core idea behind Arnold's message that some reviewers are missing is that to achieve success and change your body takes dedication, alot of hard work, and a long-term plan (a plan from this book, an expensive trainer, or maybe your own probably misinformed ideas). Arnold provides that plan for a minimal price compared to what "the trainers" will offer! Sure he makes some "scientific" mistakes. But if you wanted to learn how to fight would you rather learn from Bruce Lee or an exercise physiologist? Would you tell Bruce his ideas about kicking are wrong because it is impossible to be like a tiger? The same practicality / ideas in practice are needed in bodybuilding; as Arnold suggests look at it like an art. Scientists can tell you what they want but ultimately you have to push your body to the limits to get results. There is no such thing as a "genetic freak", I haven't seen any mutants around the gym lately, just people that know what they are or are not doing. Sure our genes dictate our predispositions but our free egos allow us to influence our own mind and consequently bodies.

Following Arnold's advice, eventually going to the gym 6 days a week will be heaven and not hell. The pain of a heavy workout will be welcome and your body will adapt and recover faster than you ever would believe possible, leaving you with energy you never thought you could have. Arnold's book is a good place to start for any person wishing to change their life and body. Just read it carefully and understand the principles.

Reasons to Buy This Product
By D. Singh
1) Comprehensiveness -

There's not a single book that can boast of the same overall coverage of bodybuilding that this one can. Let's say you aim to take several college courses to assist your bodybuilding knowledge; you'd still have to take one introductory one, one in simple nutrition, one in advanced nutrition, one in general kinesiology, one in exercise physiology, one in advanced exercise physiology, and so on and so forth. The same applies to most other books. This encyclopedia, at 800 chocobloc pages, covers beginner-intermediate and mildly advanced ground comfortably and in a handy cross-indexed reference method, with additional tips thrown in from the man who brought the sport out of its shell: Arnold Schwarzennegger.

2) Value for Money -

800 pages at 17 bucks is a steal. I ordered this item, and with ground shipping had the cost add up to about $21 dollars. Still cheap for an 800 page compendium!

3) Above and Beyond -

Aside from all the valuable textbook-style knowledge, you'll also get Arnie's own special inputs (of course updated in 1998), a nice glimpse at bodybuilding history, some tips on basic supplementation and a great section to help you if you're a competitor. The book is stacked with personal tips; chances are they'll help you pack on muscle faster than before.

4) Indirect Value -

The book also has an indirect value. If you're one of those people who buys muscle magazines for your routines and info, you can happily junk that nonsense. First of all, muscle magazines get kind of tiring, with their 'NEW AND HOT OFF THE SHELVES' this-and-that every month, their juiced-up routines and their annoying Muscletech ads, and, Weider-endorsed or not, they have a hell of a lot less credibility. With Arnold's guide in hand, you can say goodbye to dollars wasted on muscle mags for unhelpful information.

Finally, I just want to answer the very few people who've criticized this product on account of the fact that Arnold would severely overtrain back in his days, both on account of limited knowledge at the time and his excessive steroid habits. I've read the book cover-to-cover, referred to it several times, know it pretty much inside-out, and I can't find ONE instance where his preaches this overtraining. Whether this is because of the recent update or not, Arnold actually warns against being 'too enthusiastic' as this can hinder your gains, and devotes a few pages to the overtraining issue. Obviously the few that have criticized the encyclopedia based on Arnold's other work (namely "Bodybuilding for Men", which glosses over nutrition and recommends a highly juiced training schedule), have never actually gone through this book.

So in short, buy the damn book! It's cheap, it's huge, it's handy, and it'll help you get bigger like no amount of supplements can.

Europe's Infrastructure Transition: Economy, War, Nature (Making Europe), by Arne Kaijser, Erik van der Vleuten, Per Högselius

Europe's critical infrastructure is a key concern to policymakers, NGOs, companies, and citizens today. A 2006 power line failure in northern Germany closed lights in Portugal in a matter of seconds. Several Russian-Ukrainian gas crises shocked politicians, entrepreneurs, and citizens thousands of kilometers away in Germany, France, and Italy. This book argues that present-day infrastructure vulnerabilities resulted from choices of infrastructure builders in the past. It inquires which, and whose, vulnerabilities they perceived, negotiated, prioritized, and inscribed in Europe's critical infrastructure. It does not take 'Europe' for granted, but actively investigates which countries and peoples were historically connected in joint interdependency, and why. In short, this collection unravels the simultaneous historical shaping of infrastructure, common vulnerabilities, and Europe.

The Making Europe series was awarded the Freeman Award by the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) in 2014, in recognition of its significant contribution to the interaction of science and technology studies with the study of innovation.

Review

'At once finely detailed and ambitiously synthetic, this work reveals infrastructure as an agent of history. From the first railway tracks of the 1830s to migrants walking those tracks today, changing means of circulation have redefined the meaning of 'Europe.' This brave and persuasive history of infrastructure space will inspire similar studies of other regions.' Rosalind H Williams, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

'A tour de force that marks a new era of Braudelian 'total history.' Probes the material roots of European modernity: the technological systems and networks that undergird today's Europe of integration, circulation, flows, borders, and barriers. Europe's Infrastructure Transition reveals the contradictory human aims that have made these systems powerful agents of historical and environmental change.' Eda Kranakis, University of Ottawa, Canada

'In a richly-textured and original study, Högselius, van der Vleuten and Kaijser explore how system builders engineers, officials, and others made 19th and 20th century Europe. They built transport, energy, communication and other infrastructures. They believed in progress, in economic growth ending forever war, and in their ability to alter nature for the better. The authors show that, despite their bold utopian intentions, the builders encountered political uncertainties, national technical vulnerabilities, and unexpected and severe environmental costs that still have done little to dampen their enthusiasm. This book should be of interest to broad audiences.' Paul R. Josephson, Colby College, USA

'This indispensable book presents a sophisticated, highly original lens on modern European history. Far more than a study of technical systems, it reveals the profound roles of infrastructural integration in social and political rapprochement as well as how infrastructures were dysfunctionally managed, disconnected, or destroyed for national competition, war, and ideology.' Paul N. Edwards, University of Michigan, USA
