A comprehensive, foundational reference text for psychiatry

[[VIDEOID:c0b1baf34ad62fa12ef92762978c1c98]]Synopsis of Psychiatry as long been the gold standard of psychiatric textbooks. Walk into most mental health clinician's offices and this sits on their book shelf. My alma mater used the 10th edition of this book throughout the entire program.

I recently developed a psychiatry program for a local university and was selecting the foundational textbook. I went about comparing this book with Black's (2014) Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, Sixth Edition, Hale's (2014) The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry, and Gabbard's (2014) Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders. While Black, Gabbard, & Hale all offer something unique, this book by far provides the most in-depth and comprehensive overview of the field of psychiatry. This book is also priced similarly or cheaper than the books noted above. In the end, I stuck with Synopsis of Psychiatry.

The downside to this book is that it is very heavy with 1400+ pages. The text is tiny and organized into two columns per page. Sometimes I find it difficult to follow the textual organization on each page. This is likely not a book you will read cover to cover. The only colored images are of different medication pills and brain imaging at the front of the book. The rest of the book is black, white, and pink. I should note, that the other books I mentioned above are also in grey scale and have far fewer images throughout the text.

Compared with the books mentioned above, Synopsis of Psychiatry provides more detailed historical information about each mental illness and a much more thorough discussion of child and adolescent psychiatry. This book, compared with others, also provides more information about theories of personality and psychopathology and it includes two chapters dedicated to the contributions of psychosocial sciences and sociocultural sciences.

For each mental disorder, this book does include the DSM 5 criteria, history, epidemiology, clinical features, associated symptoms, differential diagnosis, course, prognosis, and treatment options. On the other hand, Gabbard's text offers a much more detailed analysis of treatment options for each individual disorder.

In the end, this is an excellent foundational and reference textbook. It is bulky, heavy, and difficult to read the tiny text. The paperback version does come with a "free enhanced ebook." I would recommend using this or the Kindle version and reading the book on your tablet or computer. It lends to a much more comfortable reading experience.

Still one of the best psychiatry textbooks.

This text book has been a study companion and reference for me since my residency days. I used this book in conjunction with the K/S review questions book to prepare for board exams and use it frequently to read up on specific topics. The book is very comprehensive. I"m still exploring the new edition, thus far I especially appreciate the update on genetics and pharmacology, among others. The DSM-5 update of all chapters is helpful for review. Actually no need to buy the APA DSM-5 book separately, this book has all the diagnostic categories in tables and explanations of diagnostic criteria. Also has numerous cases. All in all, a very worthwhile purchase.

Addendum: The purchase includes e_book access. Tried the e_book on my android tablet and find that there is no highlighting function, no copy or print function, no note function,no good text to speech function etc. All it offers is basic book reading, nothing else. Needs more functions such as those mentioned to be fully useful. I understand that more functions are offered for iOS and windows platform, android needs work.

I really liked being able to download the e_book to my android tablet via the Inkling app from google play store. It was very easy to do and once downloaded, no internet connection is necessary for reading. I consider this feature a real plus, reminds me of kindle. The downside is that Inkling download/reading is limited to two devices, tough if you are a 'multi-devicer' .

Of course, the book is wonderful. I have had all previous editions and this is up to, or surpasses previous standards. This volume is very very heavy and the ereader option is a great plus. HOWEVER, I have found the Inkling.com website, where you register the book, very very poorly constructed and very hard to navigate. As far as I can tell so far, if you havet he book open on one device, you will not be able to open it on another. And I, as yet, have not been able to download it to my iPad. The website, for me is very user unfriendly and very frustrating. This is not a book you can bring with you on a subway commute.

About the Author
Captain Preston Pysh has served in the United States military since 1999. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. Upon graduation, he attended flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he became rated in the AH-64D Apache Attack Helicopter. After flight training, Preston was assigned to the 1-2 Attack Aviation Battalion at Camp Eagle, South Korea. While stationed in Korea, he worked as an Attack Platoon Leader, Battalion Adjutant, and Assistant Operations Officer. Upon completion of his first overseas tour of duty, Preston attended the Military Intelligence Captain's Career Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and was then stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Once assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, he served as the Aviation Operations Battle Captain in Operation Enduring Freedom IX in Bagram Afghanistan. Following a successful combat deployment, Preston was then assigned as the A Company, 1-101st AH-64D Apache Attack Helicopter Company Commander during a second year deployment for Operation Enduring Freedom X-XI. Preston's company was directly responsible for the aerial security of the prominent Operation Dragon Strike mission in Kandahar city. His company performed some of the most kinetic enemy strikes during the nation's most intense fighting in Afghanistan. Preston is married to his lovely wife, Demi, and they proudly raise their two nieces, Kelly and Jenny. In his free time, he enjoys camping, golf, and any type of outdoor activity.

Wordy Title, but Worth a Read

Do not read this book thinking it is a "year in the life" type book about West Point. BUT . . . it is still worth buying/reading, particularly for potential attendees of West Point or other service academies. This ISN'T a diary, but the lengthy title, after the "diary" reference, gives you some more accurate information about the content of the book: A relatively recent West Point grad (class of 2002 or so?) has put together a collection of stories from his time at West Point to shed light on his philosophies of leadership. The stories are indeed funny (one referencing a stubbornly stinky room is a favorite), and help you get a snapshot both of life at that institution and of the type of individual that is likely to succeed at West Point -- smart; determined; and with a good sense of humor and perspective. The leadership lessons are good, although relatively generic.

I'd say this book will be most valuable and memorable to future cadets/midshipmen at the nation's service academies, as Captain Pysh does a great job of showing how some seemingly illogical traditions and/or training practices do indeed have a deeper purpose than just making the younger cadets miserable. Captain Pysh has also done a nice job by following up some of the heroes of his West Point-era anecdotes and reporting on their later, very successful army careers; again, a good way to show would-be service academy attendees why it all will matter later.

One minor downside is that Captain Pysh, who sounds like a really gifted engineer (he invents something tested by NASA, which is pretty cool) writes like one too -- there are some vocabulary and grammar mistakes that better copy editing would have/should have caught. But it does seem like this is authentically his voice, which is ultimately the most important thing.

This book was a joy to read. It was full of captivating storytelling that illustrated important leadership lessons in memorable ways. I would recommend this book especially if a person is considering applying to attend West Point. Kudos to the author on writing a great book, but even more for his hard work in reaching his West Point goals and his honorable military service for our nation.

The Diary of a West Point Cadet

Wow!!! What an inspiring and informative look into the life of a West Point Cadet. I loved that each chapter had a Bottom Line Up-Front the BLUF. My favorite message from the book was to write down your five long term goals and five short term goals. I recommend that people of all ages will enjoy and receive the leadership messages that are pouring out of "The Diary of a West Point Cadet" and it is so easy to reading. I especially recommend this book to students to read during their 7th and 8th grades of school.

Catherine - first Bestseller by Juliette Benzoni

I had read this book in my teenage time and fell in love with Catherine Legoix and her story right after a few pages.There are so many unforgettable characters whom I just adored. The story of Catherine and her love for the dashing Knight Arnaud de Montsalvy was Juliette Benzoni's very first bestseller. Juliette Benzoni was from then on my most favourite all-time author. ( I like to mention that she wrote until she passed away a few months ago over 86 very successful books !)
I belong to those readers who had to wait until each of the seven books was translated into English - my French at that time was not up to reading a whole book ! I could now go on and tell about the story - but I would like to mention here another matter! The Catherine books were published in Great Brittain and the USA in the sixties - and then never again. The seventh book in the series "La Dame de Montsalvy" never until this day translated into English ! Just leaving readers in the suspense for over 36 years if Catherine de Montsalvy was now a widow and had to bring up her children alone...
In 2015 to the great joy of the faithful Catherine readers the English publisher "Telos Publishing" started with reissuing the Catherine books after more than 40 years ! What propably no one knew, the English books did not have the complete text of the original French editions - a fact which was not even known to the author herself until I pointed it out to her a few years ago ! In BELLE CATHERINE there are 11 missing pages... I like to give my sincere thanks to Telos Publishing for the beautiful job they have done 1. for bringing back the Catherine books 2. for going to add all the missing text 3. for the beautiful Art Design and Cover design. Bravo Telos Publishing for your letting us dream again about Catherine and Arnaud. We all cannot wait to read the next books to come out...
