Actually very good

I just finished this book and came onto Amazon looking for similar book recommendations. I read the review about the 'shill' reviews, and I can see what you mean. The reviewers (including myself) haven't reviewed anything else. But this book was actually very good, even if the other reviewers were friends of the author.

I really enjoyed the characters and the character growth. I really empathized with the main character - I was frustrated (at men!), upset and sad with her. I learned a lot of interesting historical facts, but it was never teach-y. The romance wasn't over-the-top, although the main character did seem to be interested in a large number of men (but I guess in the West where there are a limited number of women and lots of men are throwing themselves at you, that could be understandable). There was also an odd change of point-of-view in the beginning - the author wrote a bit from Tim's point-of-view, when she never deviated from Aislynn's before or after.

Now I may have to go write a bunch of other reviews to make this one valid, but the bottom line is that, for me, this book is extremely enjoyable and well worth the money!

Good story but...

I loved this story. The author's characters are well fleshed-out. However, I found that the errors made me crazy. Maybe it is just the kindle version that needs some additional editing, but having errors like, pronouns misused, naming people incorrectly, and lack of punctuation just bothers me. I found I had to re-read parts to figure out what the heck was going on. I did enjoy the book if my grousing doesn't turn anyone off!

Eagerly waiting for the sequel!

Some writers excel at creating a world we want to succumb to, while others master the dynamics of a story that has the power to affect our sense of humanity. I feel that Susan Denning has found THE balance. Because I come from a filmmaking perspective, I especially enjoyed her skill at immediately grabbing the reader by the collar and dropping him in Aislynn's meticulously crafted world - the smells, the textures, the social dynamic, the moral compass of that time. And I found myself smiling with gratitude when, by page two, I realized I wanted to remain in that world. And I did, and left only when I unfortunately had to, at the end of Aislynn's journey from the girl she was to the woman she was always meant to become. I am ready, Mrs. Denning, as some of your other reviewers also seem to be, to be there for her next journey.
This is not a book you read; it is a book you experience. I hope that many, many, many get to enjoy it.

Good, but not for Everyone

This book is packed with innovative and tasty recipes, but American cooks with little experience or access to Asian ingredients may find this book a challenge. Ingredient lists go beyond soy sauce and Chinese cooking wine; lychee, gojiberries and a variety of mushrooms also show up. Recipes with seafood - shrimp, scallops and fish are heavily represented. Dorm cooks looking for a cookbook to walk them through macaroni and cheese in their rice cookers should look for a more basic manual. Braver souls with a pantry and a willingness to explore their one pot wonder will be rewarded handsomely.

Give This Cookbook a Chance

I am very unhappy with the other reviews written in response to this book.
First and foremost the reviews panning this product were written quite obviously by American kids in college who don't know how to cook. Their complaints were: 1.I won't instantly have dinner without prep work, 2. It's a rice cooker, I guess that it was created to cook rice 3. I didn't know what the ingredients were. 4. I might use it sometime.

Hence -- I would like to say:
1.All of the ingredients in this cookbook can be easily found in your neighborhood grocery store, and the more exotic ingredients can be easily found in the Asian food section.
2. Yes. This cookbook requires that you chop a few vegtables.
3. If the recipe calls for an exotic mushroom use regular standard pre-cut, pre-washed mushrooms. And, if the recipe calls for shallots you can simply substitute green oions.

Now, with that out of the way, in reviewing this book, I would would like to clarify a few things. The first is that there are two types of rice cookers. The simple standard kind cost anywhere from $20.00 to $60.00 and they cook rice. You can also cook pasta in them and they will have an automatic shut off feature. This is the type of rice cooker that I would reccomend for Americans.

On the other hand, if you are of eastern descent, or you just love East Asian cooking and you would like to use your rice cooker in much the same way that people use slow cookers -- I would suggest that you purchase a "fuzzy logic rice cooker" for around $200.00. These machines are digitaly programable and will automatically know when your food is done which will allow you to cook all kinds of things in them besides rice.

If you have a large family and you're a working mom this will enable you to have dinner on the table really fast with minimum prep work. I say go for it. And, please give this book and Beth Hensperger's book on rice cookers a fair chance. Finally, if you know any of the American college kids who panned this book, because they can't cook, please suggest that they buy a slow cooker instead. :-)

Excellent recipes which might take you a little out of your comfort zone

First, let's get out of the way who shouldn't buy this book:

* People who assume that they get their dishes without effort, this book involves prep work.
* People who want to cook their same old recipes from Betty Crocker, just with a new kitchen toy.

So, who should buy this book? Target audience for "Everything Rice Cooker" are primarily people whose kitchen is centered around the rice cooker and either have no fear of trying new stuff or grew up with Asian ingredients.

For these people, it's a beautiful book. The recipes are tasty, plenty of variations, and also easy to read (traditional book, cannot speak for the Kindle edition).

The book assumes that your main kitchen utensil is the rice cooker, if you have a lot of other kitchenware, it might be redundant for you. It will still be good read for new recipe ideas, but if you are set in your procedures in a traditional kitchen with a lot of pots and pans, it will be easier to cook the traditional way.

Mild-mannered Oxford scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had little inkling when he published The Hobbit; Or, There and Back Again in 1937 that, once hobbits were unleashed upon the world, there would be no turning back. Hobbits are, of course, small, furry creatures who love nothing better than a leisurely life quite free from adventure. But in that first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo and their elfish friends get swept up into a mighty conflict with the dragon Smaug, the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The four books' characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in The Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. Tolkien. But even if we had never gotten Robert Jordan's The Path of Daggers and the whole fantasy genre Tolkien inadvertently created by bringing the hobbits so richly to life, Tolkien's epic about the Ring would have left our world enhanced by enchantment. --Tim Appelo

About the Author
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa. After serving in World War I, he embarked upon a distinguished academic career and was recognized as one of the finest philologists in the world. He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. He is, however, beloved throughout the world as the creator of Middle-earth and author of such classic works as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He died on September 2, 1973, at the age of eighty-one.

Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

A worthy addition to anyone's collection

Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.

Over a quarter of a century ago, Richard Quebedeaux chronicled the history and prospects of evangelicalism in his sociology of religion study, The Young Evangelicals. Almost a postmodern solution

This book is a great resource and is loaded with a ton of valuable food for thought, but I cannot quite recommend it wholeheartedly without a few minor reservations.
I found many of the ideas expressed by the author and those he has interviewed and learned from to be not only refreshing but at times very moving. Most notable would be the notion that the church is supposed to be "incarnational", that is, the church is Body of Christ, the presence of Christ in the world - therefore the best apologetic is seeing people living truly and honestly under the rule of God in this life, in true community and service.
The author's main premise is that Evangelicalism has moved through three phases in the last few generations. The traditionalist phase exalted reason and doctrinal correctness above all else. The Pragmatic Phase emphasized felt needs and marketing strategies to make faith relevant and accessible to seekers. But the Younger evangelicals have turned toward "authenticity" and away from rationalistic or pragmatic approaches, seeking a God who is beyond rational definitions. They wish to communicate the faith by embodying the teaching of Christ, rather than articulating principles or programs.
The way many young evangelicals (as well as many in mainline protestant denominations and Catholic and Orthodox believers) have adapted to Postmodern thought can be both heartening and frightening. On the one hand, the recognition that rationalism has infiltrated the church is undeniable and worth correcting. Not only have liberal theologians applied naturalism to scripture in a way that removed the supernatural from faith, but conservatives have applied the scientific method to biblical interpretation to the point where individual interpretation reigns. The Holy Spirit and the consensual interpretation of the rest of the church have been ignored or rejected altogether. Rationalism has also led many in the church growth movement to embrace marketing strategies at the expense of authenticity and perhaps biblical fidelity, a plastic notion postmodern evangelicals are rejecting.
The answer many from various denominational backgrounds are embracing is one that says that the Holy Spirit grants truth to the community of the faithful, so that there is solid footing in finding the common shared beliefs of Christians in various cultures and various time periods. Younger Evangelicals look particularly to the early church prior to Constantine. They are more open to embracing the historic creeds, communication of faith through symbols and sacraments and are less arrogant about finer points of non-essential doctrines. Thus they are quicker to strike alliances across denominational lines and more open to dialog with Catholic and Orthodox believers. And they are willing to use radical hi-tech methods to communicate timeless truths.
The one cause for pause is that many in the postmodern Christian movement (some of whom are quoted in this volume) seem to embrace a bit too uncritically many of the dangerous assumptions of the postmodern fringe. They are quick to assert that "foundationalism" is inadequate in and of itself, and to point out that the church has been unduly influenced by modernism, but fail to see that in many ways they are failing to judge postmodern thinking in light of a Biblical worldview and are quickly allowing postmodern thought to unduly influence their own view of church. They are in the prison house of their own words. So they criticize the previous generation for conforming to the spirit of the rationalistic age, but freely embrace the spirit of the mystical age in which they live. They insist that truth is not "propositional" but must use propositions to make that very case.
In rejecting rationalism, many seem to throw out rationality as well. For example, Webber documents the shift from evidential apologetics to incarnational apologetics, which is a shift that has some merit. But is it necessarily true that all evidential apologetics is hopelessly enmeshed in "modernism"? Because modernism failed to find answers to metaphysical questions, does that mean that satellites will all fall from the sky and the laws of physics and engineering no longer have value? Is the resurrection not historically defensible? If "evidential" apologetics is really passe' and naive, shall we reject Paul and Luke as modernists because Paul argued from evidence and Luke cited eyewitness accounts and "many infallible proofs"? Are all of evangelical scholarship and apologetics of the last 100 years worthless?
The problem with much of the church's response to postmodern thinking is that many of the analysts of this thought wrongly assume that the only alternative to fading modernism is wholeheartedly embracing emerging postmodernism. The truth is, a Biblical worldview preceded both, and allowed for genuine rationality and appeal to evidence, tempered with the truth that humans are finite, fallen and need the grace of the Holy Spirit to ultimately make sense of it all. There are hints of such a third alternative in Webbers book particularly in the later chapters.
The chapters on youth ministry and worship are excellent and provocative. The many charts that end each chapter of this book are worth the price themselves. If Younger Evangelicals can speak to the anti-Modern generation in new ways, re-establish the church as a true reflection of Christ on Earth without succumbing to total mysticism and irrationality, then the future could look very bright. I loved almost everything about this book - almost.

Heart Freshly Stirred, But Read With Discernment

I highly recommend "The Younger Evangelicals." Dr. Webber has portrayed a stunning mosaic of what God is freshly stirring in many hearts today. God is moving many with a fresh desire for a church community that knows each other well enough to have authentic relationships. We see ourselves as a people of God's Presence with our corporate life as "mission," something we are and not just something we do. We don't just want to hear the wonderful stories in Scripture, but we want to experience them so that His story intersects our personal stories. We desire to share Jesus with others in our sphere of influence in natural, non-religious ways, living out the Good News and not just verbalizing it. A new leadership is developing with servants becoming participative leaders, a team without any abdication of healthy leadership. Dr. Webber threads this fresh move of God throughout "The Younger Evangelicals" in a way that stirs a, "Yes, Lord!" from within.
What concerns me, however, is HOW this mature man of God encourages these younger leaders to find the answer. First, his book seems to imply that the norm today is to leave the established church and start a new church plant from scratch. There's nothing wrong with that as an option, but the existing church also needs these impulses. Many of his arguments describing the established church set up the mega church as the "straw man." The mega church is only one expression of the church, and certainly has built-in problems when the goal is a relational community of believers. Second, candles, incense, icons, silent retreats, etc. are the methods that I see salted throughout the book. Methods could have been communicated in a way that heal the gap with the existing church instead of intensifying it (for instance, use "an intimate devotional time with Jesus" instead of Lectio Divina). I'm concerned that this book may splinter the western church even more by encouraging younger evangelicals to embrace outward methods that isolate them from the present church life. Third, I also believe God is after something much more central and essential than new methods. The Lord of glory wants us to change the way we experience Him and each other. Only out of this radical change in our theology can we discover new, fresh methods (if needed) to experience this new life.
I want to commend Dr. Webber for his excellent insight into this fresh move of God and for his heart to follow Him without compromise. But please read "The Younger Evangelicals" with discernment and eat the meat and spit out the bones. Younger evangelicals, please don't separate yourselves from the existing church. We need your energy and fresh way of looking at the Kingdom. Older evangelicals, don't marginalize younger evangelicals because some of the ways in which they express themselves threaten the existing order. Change may be threatening, but it's Kingdom. Younger evangelicals need mature mentors, and mentors need fresh expressions of the life of Jesus to continue to challenge them as lifelong learners. My plea is to dialog and learn from each other because we desperately need one another (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).

You need this book if you are over 30

If you are under age 30 stop reading here-and go read something else. However, if you are over 30-especially if you are in my own "boomer" generation, this is probably the most important column I'll write this year.
There is a book you need to buy. No, it isn't one of my own books-I don't use the Tuesday Column to promote books-not even my own. I review them sometimes (but that only makes it easier for you not to buy them-since my reviews are pretty complete.) I'm breaking my own rule today-I found a book every person over 30 interested in church ministries need to own.
This book is about the twentysomthing crowd Well, not exactly them, but about an emerging movement in the church made up of mostly Twentysomethings. That crowd might not like this book because the book tells us boomers all their secrets. In fact they hate being labeled at all, and hate it doubly when Boomers do it. But since they are no longer reading this and are off reading something else by now, let me tell you over-30 folk why this book is so important.
If you are a regular reader of my "Tuesday Columns" you already know I often knock us boomers for our generational arrogance. We think we are so cool, so "contemporary." We think our ways of doing church are so wonderful and we assume we've made something lasting. I often warn us that our churches are headed to becoming "Boomer nursing homes" where we continually congratulate ourselves on how cool we still are, while totally losing the next generations and the world and never noticing!
Finally there is a book that explains what is happening in the massive generational shift. So far there have been bits and pieces here and there, but now Robert Webber has put together a book outlining the secrets of this enormous shift in thinking that involves younger people mostly, but many older folk as well. Using the term "Younger Evangelicals" instead of "post modern or some other silly term, he outlines in chapter 1 the recent history of evangelicalism since 1950 in the most concise way I've seen anywhere-take that Martin Marty! That chapter is worth the first ten dollars of the book's ...price tag. But the rest of the book outlines chapter by chapter the immense shifts in the world under our boomer feet. Most boomers reading this book will feel like they are still leading singing in a "praise team" in a church with mauve carpeting while using colorful sponge covers on their individual microphones. Be careful-this book will make you feelout of date out of touch and out of coolness. If you are a "successful pastor" you'll hate it more-because some of what is happening among the next generation are things you spent ten years overthrowing when you were younger. You'll say, "well, this is only a trend among the younger folk-they'll change eventually" (what they said about us!)
In this book you'll discover in easy to read format how communication has changed, how the view of history has changed, how propositional theology is in total meltdown, how apologetics has shifted, how ecclesiology has shifted shockingly. And you'll find out how the view of the church as a marketed product has shifted, how the role of the pastor-CEO has become laughable, how youth ministry is switching from parties to prayer, [how] education is changing, the new way to see spiritual formation, how worship leadership has shifted, how art is being renewed, how evangelism is altered, and how activism happens in a new way.
Boomers don't have to read this book. We've got our churches going nicely now, we've constructed our cool wraparound-the-stage worship centers and have a good giving base so we can essentially blow of the next generations and the world and happily sing our way into retirement bringing our "sacks of rice on trays" every Sunday. We can survive into retirement singing and preaching to ourselves. A few of our parent's churches did that-they are still around full of "the Greatest generation" wondering what happened in the 1970's that seems to change things. We can do that and survive.
But if we are interested in the enormous shifts that are taking place in our children and their friends-and we seriously want to know why they think the way we do church stinks and they feel compelled to plan "authentic churches" then this book gives away their secrets.

I took and past my HCISPP (ISC2) certification. I used several books, but this one is far and about the best. It was complete, interesting and motivating. Sean Murphy know what he's talking about.

An excellent book. I really enjoyed the way the material is developed. Unlike many books of this nature - where I find there is a lot of fluff - I thought that this book was dense with information and every page had relevant and interesting points. My copy has lots of underlining now, as well as tabs marking important areas that I will re-read. It's a great reference, very thoroughly researched.

Highly recommended book for preparing for the HCISPP®

Excellent book and great study material for the (ISC)² HCISPP® - HealthCare Information Security and Privacy Practitioner exam. I only had 8 days to study for the test, and three days were spent taking the (ISC)² classroom training, which left only 5 for self-study. I ordered Sean's book a week ago, got it last Friday, and read it cover-to-cover over the weekend. It's a great supplement to the HCISPP® CBK. The book covered a lot of ground in a readily digestible format, in some ways it was better than the CBK. At a minimum I recommend reading them in tandem. In summary, I highly recommend this book, particularly if you're planning on taking the HCISPP®. And yes, I passed the exam last night. Thank you Sean!!!

A wonderful story! My favorite children's book!

This is my absolute favorite children's book, and give it to all of my new parent friends! The story is told in rhyme making the reading predictable for children. The illustrations are colorful and include "hidden" animals. And it's a wonderful, feel-good story! I only wish the author had written more stories about Maxi the Taxi Dog! (there are two other books)

The BEST Children's Book Ever!!!

I have given this book as a gift four times -- and each time it has quickly become the child's favorite book by far. A very smart little ten-month-old I know (and love) crawls over to the bookshelf and gets "Maxi Taxi" three to four times a day and hands it to you to read it to him. I can recite the book in my sleep at this point!! The rhymes are lovely; the illustrations are sweet and the message is just beautiful. I promise you that your young children will adore this book.

About the Author

Thomas Barta is an internationally recognized thought leader on marketing leadership. As a McKinsey Partner with a senior marketing background, he helped shape the strategy and define the DNA behind many Fortune 500 brands. Barta has consulted and marketed for over 20 years, in 14 industries, in 45 countries. Each year, he gives more than 40 keynotes and seminars for companies, industry associations, and universities. His clients include many of the world’s most prominent companies. As a dean of McKinsey’s highest-rated internal program, he trained over a thousand McKinsey leaders on driving change without authority. Barta is the leadership Dean of the global CMO Fellowship Program, a joint venture between McKinsey and the Marketing Academy. He has written for the Huffington Post, McKinsey Quarterly, and is a columnist for cmo.com, the No. 1 online magazine for marketing leaders.

 

Patrick Barwise is Emeritus Professor of Management and Marketing at London Business School and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics. He is an experienced consultant and expert witness on international commercial, tax and competition cases. His book Simply Better, co-authored with Seán Meehan, won the American Marketing Association’s 2005 Berry-AMA Book Prize. Barwise’s articles have appeared in  the Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, and Financial Times.

Practical Help - Great Ideas, graphics, templates

I am usually apprehensive about books like this but this books graphics tuned me in. As I thumbed through the book, I kept stopping at the graphics and what they were telling me. Those ideas drew me in to read the book more carefully. It's a good book with good ideas.

A great theme is that Doing Marketing is very different from Leading Marketing -- there are 12 major themes of the book. They're worth reading for marketing leaders. Some of the stuff, you'll be familiar with but the book gives you a solid baseline. I'm carrying it across the country a few times as I get through it.

Marketer's Impact and Success

The 12 Powers of a Marketing Leader: How to Succeed by Building Customer and Company Value is entertaining as well as informative. The other day I looked at a box of mints and wanted to show off what i read in the book about how the 50 size was borrowed from the success of that size in other countries. The book is funny in the way it shows how marketing leaders should be the drivers and how they currently are not and how to make that happen.
With reference to a company with customer feedback gathering portals right at point of service. (I was reminded of a supermarket in India where I had to select emoticons as feedback of the visit.) Walk the Halls is a good advice for many roles. The book has some interesting thought points with related studies in terms of percentage. for 'Contribution to Marketer's Impact and Success'.

Effective Delivery of Lots of Great Info I Could Put to Immediate Use

This book has tons of great info and I love the way it's presented. It can be read in small chunks or all the way through front to cover. The theories in here are tested and true advice and guidance backed up by facts. For instance there's a specific area I really know I could do better and this book not only points it out but convinces me to work on it by telling me why. I really enjoy books like this that make a real difference and make me better at something or as a person and this book does both for me. It also kept my interest visually and explained things in lots of ways (grouping of the subjects, presenting statistical info, including lots of graphs and illustrations, etc.) so I could really get a grip on the information and put it to immediate use. Lots of books have great info but the delivery on this book is what makes it appeal to my style.
