Aerodynamics for Everyone!

This truly is a gem of a book for the general reader with an intelligent interest in matters aeronautical, as well as the beginning student in aero engineering. It does not plumb the depths of the subject - there are other books (including ones by the same author) which do that. But it covers a huge scope, from aerodynamic fundamentals, through aircraft characteristics and performance, to propulsion systems, and a little about structures and materials. Supersonic and hypersonic flight are included. The treatment is quantitative (there are lots of equations), but in a simplified form and at a level which should be comprehensible to anyone with high-school mathematics. The maths is there to convey principles, without losing the reader in a myriad of detail. Three things which make this book stand out are the clear, approachable style of the author, the fascinating historical perspectives which are sprinkled throughout the book, and the illustrative "design boxes".

Great start-up book for aerospace/aeronautical engineers

Anyone interested in learning the fundamentals in aerodynamics, aircraft design and aircraft control (as well as some astrodynamics) should have this book. Even in my upper class aerospace engineering courses I have found this book to be a GREAT help explaining the basics in a simple, methodical way.
The equation derivations included in the book are essential for a complete understanding of the material. Some basic calculus skills are needed, but anyone interested in engineering should have that anyway. The Appendix and Atmospheric Tables in the back of the book are also a great reference. The book also includes a historical point of view, essential to understanding why planes look the way they do today. This book is written in a style similar to his lectures, using everyday language and vocabulary.
Dr. Anderson is an incredible professor and author--making even the most complicated of subjects easy to understand.

"THE BEST" book on all of the basics of aerodynamics

I have read several texts on the fundamentals of aerodynamics and flight. This book is by far the best at clarity of explanation with the right mixture of mathematics and applications. The math is enough to educate you on the fundamentals without burying you in endless derivations without giving you the answer to "what does it all mean". When you are done reading it, you will know the theory, the application, and the historical significance. I wish this had been the text I picked up first.

About the Author
John Bateson is Executive Director of the Contra Costa Crisis Center in Contra Costa County, California and the author of Building Hope. He has served on the steering committee of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Far Too Many Broken Hearts ...

Most people do not know how many deaths occur at the bridge month in and month out every year. Most people also don't know that a net that would prevent those deaths was approved by the Bridge Authority in 2008, but was never installed because the money has not been allocated.

I was in that population of "most people" blissfully unaware of those two facts until my son jumped to his death from the bridge last year.

Mr.Bateson has written a thorough, eloquent and fair history of suicide on the bridge and the madness of allowing these deaths to continue. This book should be in the hands of many more people -- and particularly those who wish to change the two facts above.

I want to thank John Bateson for his book about suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge. I will never look at the
Golden Gate the same way again and indeed I have an entirely different regard for San Francisco. I used to see the place as a progessive city, now I see it is a back water town peopled by governing forces (Bridge District Commissioners of the Golden Gate) who are provincial snobs and ignorant. Every time I cross a bridge, over pass or see a tall structure in the Chicago area, I am looking for a suicide barrier. The tall fencing I often see on these structures is probably there not to keep people from leaping off, as much as it there to keep people from throwing trash on traffice below. Thank you John Bateson for your excellent book covering all aspects of the Bridge, barriers, and suicide: topics that are new to me except that I had to look back over my life and realize that I have known eight peolpe who have died by suicide.

About the Author
Carrick Devine, born in Blenheim, New Zealand, studied at Canterbury University in New Zealnd where he obtained an MSc in Marine Biology and then a PhD at the University of Otago Medical School in 1969, studying physiology/pharmacology of smooth muscle and its innervation. Following a post doctoral period at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center working on smooth muscle, he returned to New Zealand and worked with striated muscle - i.e. meat - at the Meat Industry Research Institute of New Zealand, becoming sector leader. He has been involved in the development of electrical stimulation for meat tenderness, quality assurance procedures to ensure that appropriate levels of tenderness are attained, establishing neurological indices of humaneness of slaughter procedures using microdialysis probes, to harmonise western and halal slaughter methods and developing protocols to reduce preslaughter stress of cattle and sheep. He now works on biosensors at the bioengineering sector of Hortresearch and is presently engaged on a collaborative project with the MIRINZ Centre of Agresearch to measure meat tenderness on-line using near infrared spectroscopy. He obtained a DSc in 1991 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry.

Michael E. Dikeman; Born in the state of Kansas, USA. Received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Kansas State University and M.S.degree from Michigan State University. Professor at Kansas State University from 1970 to present. He teaches courses ranging from beginning animal/meat science to graduate level. His research interests include effects of genetics and management systems for livestock production on carcass composition and meat quality. He has particular interests in postmortem technology to enhance meat quality, and in effects of meat cookery on tenderness. He received the Meats Research Award from the American Society of Animal Science. He served as President of the American Meat Science Association, and the Federation of American Societies of Food Animal Sciences.

Carrick Devine, commenced his career with the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute measuring ocean currents and salinity patterns in Antarctica followed by an MSc at Canterbury University on the ecology of a shrimp in a sandy beach. At the University of Otago he gained a PhD on the ultrastructure, physiology and pharmacology of smooth muscle and its innervation followed by a Post Doctoral fellowship at the Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center on smooth muscle.

After joining Meat Industry Research Institute of New Zealand (MIRINZ) in 1973, Dr Devine worked on optimising electrical stimulation to make meat tender - a process in all New Zealand lamb, beef and venison processing plants. Subsequent research showed further tenderisation, not only required the best electrical stimulation parameters, but also holding at optimum temperatures throughout critical parts of processing. Animal pre-slaughter stress often toughens meat so stress reduction procedures were developed. Stress amelioration was shown to also occur by conditioning animals to various stressors.
Neurophysiological studies showed pre-slaughter head only electrical stunning to be humane and thus enabled the harmonisation of halal and western slaughter procedures. Dr Devine later joined Plant and Food Research and with AgResearch, successfully developed near infrared spectroscopy techniques (NIR) to measure meat tenderness on-line.

Dr Devine obtained a DSc based on his research and is a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and gained an ONZM for work on meat. He is currently an editor of the Encyclopedia of Meat Sciences.

Werner Klinth Jensen: Born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Studied at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen, where he graduated as Veterinary Surgeon in 1959. After spending some time at the Danish Meat Research Institute in Roskilde, he was sent to Danepak Ltd. at Selby, Yorkshire and later at Thetford Norfolk, United Kingdom. Technical Director at Danepak Ltd. 1964-1976. From 1976 at the Danish Meat Research Institute, first as Manager of the Microbiology Laboratory, then as Manager of the Meat Processing Department, then International Relations Manager and finally Information Manager. Retired in 2000; thereafter working as Consultant for the Institute.

Fantastic artbook companion to the game

[[VIDEOID:mo3IL6114CF24XA]]If you're fans of The Evil Within, you'll be glad to know that this is a great companion artbook to the game.

This game is directed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil series. In some ways, this book does feel like a spin-off of Resident Evil.

The book's a 224 page hardcover. It's quite thick because the paper is thick, and the good low gloss type.

The concept art is fantastic. For the humans in their normal uninfected form, there's really nothing to shout about. But I'm seriously impressed by the 3D renders for the human characters. Yeah, you know that they are still 3D models but they look real good. The infected human form are more interesting.

Highlight of the book is of course the grotesque human and creature designs. There's plenty of blood stain, skin lesions, burns, mutation, exposed flesh, and more blood stains. Things like intestines falling out of an open stomach in this game looks pretty mild by comparison. In terms of the gore factor, it's close to Resident Evil. I wonder what it would be like if one day Shinji Mikami decides to create a Resident Evil and Evil Within crossover.

The creature and enemy designs are great. There's no shortage of ideas when it comes to designing scary enemies. All of them look great, and by great I mean gross. There's a good mix of 2D and 3D art. I'm not sure if it's because of the PS4, but the 3D rendered graphics for games nowadays are just getting better. The amount of detail for the artworks are incredible.

The textures of the skin, veins and meat mesh from the 3D monotone renders are amazing. I actually do not mind if this book shows only monotone renders. The designs are good regardless of whether they are in colour or not.

The last section of the book has a generous amount of beautiful moody environment art. They are also painted in great detail just like all other artworks in the book.

I can't think of any downsides to this book. Maybe they could have included more commentary. But that's about it.

This is a great art book. Highly recommended.

Good Artwork, Bad Quality, Ugly Review

The book itself is really nice, as far as the art quality goes, but the actual physical quality of the book is awful. The spine of the book, the way the pages are placed in the hardcover, is so bad, that as soon as the book was opened, the pages ripped off at the base. Some of the pages are almost completely coming out, and i have only opened it once. I will try and see if i can either get another book, or trade out the one i have. Until then, the review is as stands.

Good Contents, Construction Could Be Better

This is a nice artbook, but as others have commented, the binding is a little suspect. It's not terrible, so I only docked it half a star (which, unfortunately, became a whole one), as none of the pages are falling out or anything. But the binding is visible when the book is open, and I tend to read it kind of half-open, so as not to stress the binding further. That isn't an ideal way to read, especially for a book this large. However, the page stock is good and thick, and doesn't seem flimsy.

The contents are interesting--I especially like Ikumi Nakamura's whimsical commentary. Some of the renders are contained in the game itself as an extra, but there are many interesting concepts that never made it into the game. There is also slightly more background information on the characters, which probably should have been covered in the game itself!

If you're a big fan of the game, this is a great book, but it probably won't stand up to aggressive handling (and really, why would you need to do so?).
