This volume consists of eight series of case studies (40 in all), each focusing on a variety of patterns associated with a common clinical disorder: asthma, facial disorders, poor appetite, abdominal and epigastric pain, abnormal bowel movements, abnormal urination, constraint disorders, hypochondrial and intercostal pain.

Each case provides a systematic analysis of the patient's presentation, from the cause and site of the disorder to the underlying theory of the case. The pathogenesis, pattern of disease, treatment principle, and modalities of treatment (including both herbs and acupuncture) are described in illuminating detail. The authors, themselves both clinicians, then pose a number of questions that are likely to confront the practitioner.

More than a hundred charts organize and present in graphic form what is explained in the text. Each chapter concludes with a diagnostic overview or "tree" that summarizes the process of differential diagnosis for the patterns associated with that disorder.

About the Author
Li Xuemei is a medical doctor and specialist in both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Born in Beijing in 1956, she completed her studies in Chinese and Western medicine at the Beijing College of Chinese Medicine in 1982. She then worked as a physician at the teaching hospital associated with the college where she taught many Chinese and Western students. Dr. Li has lectured in China, Canada, Switizerland, Yugoslavia and Ireland, where she now lives and practices.

Zhao Jingyi was born in Beijing in 1954. He graduated in 1982 from the Beijing College of Chinese Medicine, where he now teaches. Dr. Zhao is a practicing physician, and teaches propaedeutics in Chinese medicine to Chinese and Western students. In addition to this book, he has published teaching materials for his students, and has conducted much clinical research in this field.

An amazing learning tool & resource

This book, as well as Patterns & Practice in Acupuncture, has been invaluable, both as a student and a practitioner. Each case is well-documented, and the principles of diagnosis and treatment are clearly explained. It's very beneficial to see cases beginning to end. I can't recommend these books enough.

This is the most concise book for school and board case study prep. It has everything for the covered cases and enhances your focus so that case studies are clear. LOVE IT!

A "must have" for the beginning practitioner

It is known fact that the best way to deepen ones understanding of Chinese medicine is by reviewing case studies. As a beginner practitioner, who has finished schooled more than a year and a half, this book was just what I was looking for.

What I like about the book is that is follows you through from the patient's presentation, to the underlying theory of the case, emphasizing the pathogeneses rather than just the pattern diagnosis which is what I find in most other TCM books. This I believe gives a practitioner a better understanding of the pathology as a dynamic process rather that a fixed imbalance.

Another refreshing aspect is that the treatments presented in most cases are combination of acupuncture with herbal formula. The authors explain why they chose each point and sometimes how the points were needled in order to maximize the therapeutic effect. When a herbal formula are used, the authors usually present the basic underlying formula and then explains how it was modified to tailor it to the patients needs.

Another nice feature is that the book introduces advanced concepts which do not appear in basic TCM books. For example it presents a complicated case in which a patient was to weak for herbal tonification, and it explains how to deal with such a case. Another chapter deals with "Constraint Disorders" which most TCM books do not address, but I think are quite common in a Western clinic.

I can go on and on praising the book, but I will just summarize that if you wish to hone you diagnosis and treatment skills, you will not be disappointed.

Well done conclusion to this series.

This was the third and final book in the Search for WondLa series by DiTerlizzi. It was a well done conclusion to this series, although it was also my least favorite book in this series. It just lacked the wonder and adventure of the first two books and was more about politics and war.

Eva Nine is in hiding with Haley in the forest. She is worried about luring the evil Lorac to her companions and fearful of anyone else dying because of her actions. When Haley finally convinces her that hiding is cowardly, Eva ventures back into the fray. She ends up seeking out help from the only place she can and then speaking to the Queen herself.

Eva has changed a lot over the series. This book starts with her hiding from her obligations out of fear for those around her. However she finally steps up to accept her responsibility and ends up becoming an admirable heroine. This book is Eva’s big delve into politics, she is dealing with a number of different parties who are all lying (or at least telling their own version) of the truth. I honestly felt a bit sad that she had to go from the excited and adventurous girl in the first book to this scared girl weighed down by all these responsibilities...but I guess it’s all part of growing up.

I was a little disappointed that Rovee wasn’t in the story more, he is in there some towards the end but is absent for the beginning. I missed a lot of Eva’s friends in the beginning of the book.

This book is a bit slower in pace than the previous books as well. The story wraps up nicely. DiTerlizzi includes an Epilogue and then a few sections that occur 100, 200, and 300 years later. These sections were kind of interesting and let us see what Eva Nine’s world developed into. However, aside from being somewhat amusing they didn’t add a lot to the story.

I continue to enjoy the beautiful illustrations throughout and loved how the story had both humor and heart.

Overall this was a well done conclusion to this series. I enjoyed the beautiful illustration and all the unique characters. The story was slower in this book than in the previous two. Eva has grown up and there wasn’t as much wonder and adventure in this book, she is dealing more with deceit and politics. Everything ties up nicely and overall I was very pleased with this series. I would recommend to middle grade and older readers who love reading about adventure and science fiction. What really sets this book apart is the beautiful illustrations and the way the book is laid out.

A Worthy Conclusion

The Battle for WondLa is the final piece in a three-book puzzle. When The Search for WondLa first appeared, my entire family was instantly hooked. Delightful, vibrant characters, a stunningly vivid world, and wholly original plot make DiTerlizzi's trilogy a must-read for any lover of fantasy. -actually, I take that back. I believe that anyone- despite age or genre preferences- would fall in love with the WondLa books. The characters are simply so REAL. They have wonderful flaws as well as wonderful strengths. They love. They are betrayed. They fight, they run; they win, they lose. Ultimately, friendship, loyalty and good emerge triumphant, and although I hated having to say goodbye to this universe, I was satisfied. DiTerlizzi manages to wrap up all loose ends, yet leave enough open so that the story never truly ends. You are not left wondering what will happen to the beloved characters, but you find yourself *imagining* what will, which is a drastic difference. (plus Tony DiTerlizzi's illustrations- gorgeous. whimsical. perfect. I often flip through the books simply for the joy of looking at the pictures.)

So, if you enjoyed the first books, if you enjoy a good fantasy romp, if you seek adventure, if you long for a tale of sweeping discovery, if you want to rediscover the joy of a good, satisfying fiction, (ultimately- if you breathe) -- read this book, read this entire trilogy.

I promise that you will not be disappointed.

I love this chronicle! It's the best I have ever read! I can't stop thinking about Eva and Hailey. I think this is an amazing book and I wish it never ended! Please keep writing stories like these?!?!
