Curiosity lead to disappointment then agreement

Curiosity on what the 20 plus common paradigms were along with the dangers and guidance on each to refocus a safety program was the driver behind my reading this book. As a seasoned Certified Safety Professional, I found I knew the paradigms being presented. I was initially disappointed in the discussion. I did not like how the author shot holes in each and every one of them. Then I discovered his underlying theme was how application of each paradigm typically diverted focus on the key ingredients of a robust safety program, those being: safety responsibility, accountability and hazard mitigation. The arguments against the paradigms then took on a new light. Many had all been in my tool box, and I remembered how their successful use increased when reinforced by the organizations safety responsibility, accountability and hazard mitigation processes. By the books end, I concluded with my own experiences that application of the paradigms were doomed to failure if the organization didn’t maintain the connection to its true purpose, that being preventing opportunities for injury.
